Lineoln, Mass., Nov. 27— Nineteen persons were kilied and 25 seriously injured in a rear end collision caused by the Boston & Maine railroad’s fast Montreal express running into a local pas- senger train, the locomotive sing part way threugh the eoach immediately ahead. Flames broke out in the wreckage and practically destroyed the entire train of four coaches. A number| of the injured were pinned down | by the wreckage and burned to telescoping the rear car and pas-{death. Anepidemic of dyptheria which has caused seyeral deaths at Williams on the North bordey iine of Beltrami count was re- sponsible foi the fumigation of ap entire Canadian Northern train at Winnipeg Wednesday byl Dy, Blakeslee of this city. Williams has been ¢quaranteed and stringent health precautions | put into effect at this time, but before the authorities became aware of the contagion existing three deaths had occurred and one of the bodies had been ship- ped to Winnipeg and from that place to Detroit, Minn., for burial. Dr. Blakeslee was sumwmoned to the scene the early part of last| week and upon arriving promptly | took active precationary measures quarantining the greater portion of the city and immediately de-| manding of the Canadian North- ern officials that they fumigate| in a thorough wannerthe train which coaveyed the remains of the unfortunate vietim of the dread disease. The Canadian| officials acted entirely in accor- dance with the health officer in{ the matter and promptly placed the entire train under the ban| of “fumigating laws’ and “odors’ | not without considerable grumb- | ling on the part of passengers. | Dr. Blakeslee returned Thurs- says the spread of the disease, had not heroic steps been talken, would probably have been very | rapid and the deaths many. According to all reports, the hunters who have gone out from this city for a few hours’ hunting ‘have been much more successful| than those who have gone far into the wouds. Director Symington of the Be- midji band today stated that the first indoor concert to be given by the band would take place on or about Dec. 10. The concert was postponed from Nov. 23, the daue originally fixed, because of the city ball beiug engaged. The concert will consist of a number of excellent selecticns by the band besides several vocal and instrumental numbers by local talent. Hunters Rewurn Home. T. J. Miller and Charles Swed- back of this city, D. A, O'Dell of Wells and Andrew Nolan of Nary returned to Bemidji this morn- ing from::their hunting lodge near Red Lake, where they have spent tho season. The hunt was an entirely unsuccessful one, and nnt a deer or muose was killed by any member of the party. One member of the party explains that the swamps are in sach con- dition that it is impossible to travel through them, and this is given as a reason for the ill suc- cess that attended the hunters. Brought Three Deer Home. Judge Spooner, Attorney P. J. Russell, Matt Mayer, H. H. Wheelock and A.'A. D. Rahn re- turned to Bemidji this afternoon after having spent some time at Mr. Wheelock’s home in Maple Ridge township. The party was entirely successful and brought back with them three large sized deer. Married Saturday Night. William H. Nelson of Brainerd and Miss Julia Grunden of this city were married Saturday night by Judge Pendergast. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson are well known in the city and will make Bemidji their future home. ? Bigelow Case Dismissed. The case against E. M. Bigc: low, charged with embezzlement, in getting two deer each. ! was dismissed this morning by Judge Skinyik. According toa report which reached Bemidji today, a party of Soo surveyors have been and are at the present time at work running a line from Duluth west and have spent several days in the vicininy of Rebedew lake, east of Tenstrike. The line, it is claimed, will be run in a westerly direction from Duluth to connect with the Soo railway line at Thief River Falls. The survey now being run will cross the M. & L. at Tenstrike, and residents of that village are hopeful of securing another rail- way.
