THE cause of drainage in Min- nesota, though now on the top of the crest of public favor, is nevertheless somewhat en- dangered by the attempt which is being made to turn its strength to political purposes. The state drainage league, | organized here in Bemidji at a meeting called for drainage dis- cussion by the state drainage commission, is being manipulat- ed by certain of its officers to further certain political ends. The first meeting of the league was held at Crookston. It was attended by prominent Minne- sotans from all parts of the state. There were speeches by Gover- nor Johnson, by Senator Clapp and by prominent members of the legislature and the cause of drainage was tremendously ad- vanced. This was the business of the meeting and everybody felt that it was well done and a later meeting to elect officers and :adopt a constitution excited but little interest. This later meet- iug was manipulated by W. E. Verity of Wadena and his part- T BITSINORTH 4 FROM THE COUNTRY e i A i B 5 B e B B The Rainy’s sawmills are| stilled. 2 —o— Crow Wmcr county is bonded for $250,000. -—0— Eagle Bend’s creamery is a bird alright. —— The New York Life will have to show Missouri, < Slip Vacant buildings at Blackduck are all getting full. sl It’s a good bet that December will come in like a lion. =35 Annual lodge of sorrow, B.P. A Irecent visit of the seeretary to the twin cities brought out the significant paragraph im oue of the big twin city dailies that the drainage league would demand the nomination of candidates by the republican convention pledged to drainage. All these little straws ge to show that the state drainage league is being used, not so mueh to further the cause of drainage, as to assist in certain political maoves. Drainage in Minnesota needs no advocates at Washington eut- side of Minnesota’s able and will- ing delegation of senators and representatives, The position of secretary of the state drainage league should be one of honor and trust and there are plenty of able men in the state willing to give their services to the cause of draimage without being paid. The state drainage league is neglecting a great work when it attempts to make itself a political auxillary. The Crookston meeting did more to further the cause of drainage than anything that has been done before or since; the Wadena meeting should give it another impetus, so that the two will have created a public senti- who are Bagley Times: The Olberg Journal is building an electric R.
