SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR A Progess of Year. THE year of 1905 has been a notable one in the development of Beltrami county. Two new roads into new territory have. been built, opening for settlement some of the finest lands in the state of Minnesota, covered with hard woods and of a rich rolling soil, easily drained, and once cleared, destined to become among the most valuable agricul- tural lands 1n the northwest. New towns have already been platted along the lines of these new roads and that section of Beltrami county between Be- midji and”the great Red Lake will quadruple in population within the next eighteen months. These two roads, in addition, help to make Bemidji the most important railroad center in north central Minnésota, and the proposed road from this city to Detroit will make Bemidji a division point on more than one railroad and a railroad town of the first importance in northern Minnesota. Development of the resources of Beltrami county has hardly begun. We have been too busy cutting off pine, When the pine is all gone Beltrami county will have made a good start toward permanent growth and its progress from that time on will be steady and rapid. Gaining Headwa.y. THE meeting of the executive committee of the state drainage league at St. Paul, Saturday was well attended and autracted general attention, so much so, that it constitutes another long stride toward the speedy solu- tion of the drainage problem. The one great obstacle to the carrying out of a comprehensive policy of drainage has been the ignorance, and consequently the indifference, of the people of the state as to what drainage means and what it will accomplish. The state drainage league has already done a great work in stirring the state to a realization that drain. age means more to the state as a whole than has been supposed. The Crookston meeting of the league, the meeting with the Du- ulth Commercial Club and last week’s meeting of the executive committe of the league have done much for drainage. At the meeting Saturday a committee was appointed on edu- cation and the work of this com- mittee, which will issue bulletins from time to time, will go a long way toward convincing our repre- sentatives, bgth state and nation, of the need of systematic aid from the government. ——“ RIS It should be borne in mind that i every cold weakens the lungs, low- ers the vitality and prepares the system for the more serious dis- eases, among which are the two greatest dest.\'(ayers of human life, ' pneumonia and consumption. Cough Remedy opularity by its has won its grenttg prompt cures of this most common ailment. It aids expectoration, re- lieves the lungs and opens the secretions, effecting a speedy and ent cure. It counteracts any tendency toward pneumonia. i Chamberlain’s Price a5c, Large Size 50c. i Fifty Years the Standard ‘DR: WRIC - BAKING POWDIR & Cream of Tartar Powder Made From Grapes No Alum E g st b b b b bbb ] BITS|NOQRTH § b 2R2% | COUNTRY 4 THE me“ The oyster has his day again. —— The duckis a bird this year all right. —_—— Eastward the march of wcods- men takes its way. —0— Ada’s saw mill, after a stunt of 8,000,000, quits for the season. — The Wadena cracker is in pretty much everybody’s mouth. —0— The Mizphah Message opines that John D. is the “feller” who has the *rocks.” —— The Sentinel loves the charter alright—almost as much as it loves the Pioneer. - —_—— “Pat Crowe has been called in from circulation,” is a good one by the Crookston Times. —0— There are many mouths to feed and the demand for north country flour is enormous, Lo Pe ' ham will build a city hall when it can find a contractor who can do it with eight thousand dollars. —0— Fall is that season of the year when housecleaning days fall with awful weight upon the un- happy head of the house. —_—— The seeretary of the state drainage league protests that he should not be suspected of drain- ing the league’s money into his own pockets and declares there is not much to drain anyhow.
