THE action of village recorder Bailey last evening in refusing to join with Mayor Henderson and trustee Graham in appoint- ing election judges for the four wards of the city of Bemidji is pretty substantial evidence in confirmation of the belief that those who opposed the adoption of the charter are prepared to|. stop at nothing in their efforts to|. thwart the will of the people and defeat city organization. Granting for the moment that the village attorney’s [jepinion that the yillage council has ne authority to appoint election judges for the four wards of the city is well taken, were the vil- lage recorder desirous of repre- senting the will of the people who elected him he would' have| joined in the appointment of judges anyhow. If sueh action isillegal time will demenstrate| that fact; it is an action which any official might properly take even though he were uncertainas toits technical legality. That it is the action which the people of the city want is amply evi- denced by a vote in favor of the charter of 3 to 2. Last night’s developments are conclusive evidence that the op- ponents of the charter are de-| termined to rule Bemidji.regard-| less of whether the people want them to or not. A Good Example.. THE Commercial Club of Du- luth has resolved to lend its aid to the work of the state drainage league in agitating the matter of drainage and in urging upon the tlegislature of the state the ne- cessity of state supervision and encouragement of the work. It also stands ready to furnish whatever aid may be required by the state’s representatives in Congress to- secure federal aid for the reclamation of Indian swamp lands. This action on the part ef the Duluth Commercial Club. should be duplicated by every commer- cial club inthe state and the commercial clubs of Northern Minnesota cities should certain- |jects are now being developed. | This valley has long been cele-| ly lose no time in placing them- selves emphatically in support of the work undertaken by the state drainage league. The friends of drainage have the movement well under way and prompt and vigorous action now will give the cause of drainage a momentum that will establish it as one of the foremost poelicies of the state. Colds It should be borne in mind that every cold weakens the lungs, low- ers the vitality and prepares the system for the more serious dis- eases, among which are the two greatest destroyers of human life, l pneumonia and consumption. J Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy has won its great popularity by its prompt cures of this most common ailment. It aids expectoration, re- lieves the lungs and opens the secretions, effecting a speedy and permanent cure. It counteracts any tendency toward pneumonia. Price 25¢, Large Size 50c.
