SUBSCRIPTION 85 PER YEAR Jack Pine Lands. us a good deal aboub»f_,he jack pine lands of northern Minnesota which we do not now know. We that live upon them know that these lands produce most abun- t'ié,nt crop from any seed sown, but the outside world generally ' regards them as worthless. The| sooner we disabuse people’s for the development of north central Minnesota. Puresand is certainly poor soil for agricul- tural purposes but the jack" pine lands are not pure sand but largely clay as every man who has worked them knows. When eyerybody knows this fact the agricultural development of this part of the state will be fully underway. To this end we be- lieve that nothing more effective can be done than to exhibit year. ly at the state fair samples of the products of which this section is so luxuriantly capable, The sug- gestion of ‘a fair at Blackduck next year is a good one. It should be carefully organized and prizes offered which will make it an inducement to bring together a large collection of Beltrami county farm products. We believe that the business men of the county should take up this matter asa matter of adyertise- ment; the money expended will be well invested. [ The Winter's Outlook. THERE is every prospect for a Minnesota. The amount of log- ging, pine and eedar, which will be done will be consiberably in excess of that of the past two seasons. The demand for men ’ [t the present time is great and it is probable that from 20,000 to 25,000 will be used in the woods during the season. It is to be regretted that Bemidji has been 80 slow to organize its possibilies as a labor market. Bemidj is the natural gateway to the woods but we have done little or noshing to assist nature. There appears to be altogether too much jeal- ousy and suspicion among the business men of the eity in re- gard te advertising this city as a labor market. Some think the saloons ought to do it all because they get the greater part of the benefit. Some think the em- ployment offices ought to do it all man sent into the.woods. If we would all be satisfied to let the other fellow get what be can and be willing to spend a little that Iwe might get something our- Iselves, Bemidji would within a month be the biggest labor mar- ket in the northwest.
