THD majority of country mer- chants and business men, per- haps, feel doubtful as to the value of advertising. They advertise “more or less”’—and are more or less satisfied with the results. Meanwhile the big merchant of the cities has no doubt in his mind whatever. He knows. Be- cause.he knows 'he works upon the postoffice department and se- cures an order making it possible to send mail to all persons along free delivery routes by number* Then the big city merchant be- gins to send out his advertising matter. He spends thousands of dollars advertising his wares through the big city newspapers which reach every farmer along every rural free delivery route; he spends hundreds of dollars for catalogues, circular letters, postage, etc. What is the result? The coun- try business man whois doubtful about the results of advertising finds competition with his big city brother grow keener and keener, Ifit does not pay the country werchant to advertise to his patrons why does it pay the A Cream of Tartar Powder Made From Grapes No Alum city merchant to advertise to those same patrons? The answer is not far. One knows that it pays and keeps everlastingly at it while the other doubts if its pays and advertises when he feels compelled to. Double, treble, quadruple your advertising appropriation and never let up letting the people know thatyouhavesomething just as good and just ascheap as the city merchant, and perhaps bet- ter and cheaper, than the eity merchant and you will find that his competition is not so mueh to be dreaded after all. The Course of Justice. THE convictions which have been secured at the present term of court and the length of sent- ence imvosed in each case will do much toward inculcating a more wholesome respect for the law in Beltrami county. The back- woods of Beltrami county is not to be a safe harbor for criminals and the present term of court will help to teach them this fact. and heavy sentences imposed and a good beginning has been made. Could the murderers of the Dahls be discovered and pun- ished Beltrami county’s reputa- tion as an unhealthy place for lawbreakers would be pretty firmly established. The county has put forth every effort to this end and we believe that time will bring ghe truth about this great crime to light and mete out the punishment which the guitly de- serve and the protection of so- ciety demands. Meanwhile six new entries on ‘the reception books of the state penetentiary give notice that Beliraml county is no longer safe refuge for criminals. IT 1S easy enough for the peo- ple of southern Minnesota to see why northern Minnesota wants drainage; drainage will immense- ly boost the value of thelands drained and increase the pros- perity of the territory affected. Yet there is no man in Minnesota who will give a half hour’s consideration to the mat- ter that will not admit that south- ern Minnesota will reap great benefits from drainage than does northern Minnesota. The south- ern part of the state finds it hard to remember that it owns thous- ands of acres of swamp land in the northern half of the state. —for— LIQUOR LICENSE.
