THE strike of the printers of the country to obtain an eight hour day has reached Minnesota and the contest is now on ‘in the larger cities, the country being little affect beyond the fact that a good many non-union printers are being drawn from the coun- try to supply the places of the strikers, Every big printing establishment in the large cities is affected. The union printers demand eight hours as a day in- stead of nine with the same pay as at prssent. If they win this means that it will cost every printing establishment in the state oune ninth more to do their work, one ninth more for wages, one ninth ;more for interest on the millions of dollars invested in costly plants, on ninth more for the general cost of doing business. If the printeré win the employers will at first suffer this loss but in the end the peo- ple will have to pay it just as in end they have to pay the cost of every product no matter what it may be. The eight hour day will prob- ably in the end prevail, though possibly not as a result of the present strike, but the conten- tion of the employers for 'an open shop will also probably be made good. THERE are few lines of busi- ness in which competition -is” so keen and the field is so over- crowded as the newspaper busi- ness. Because of this fact with- in the past few months the St. Paul Globe and the Minneapolis Times haye been ' forced to suspend publication after a total loss of over a million dollars. In Crookston two dailies are strug- gling for existence where but one can make money; the other one has already sunk over $60,- 000. . In Bemidji three weeklies and one daily occupy a field where there is barely room’ for one daily and two weeklies and yet another weekly is being launched. Itisno wonder that the poverty of the newspaper man is a by-word the world over, How much interest do you show the teacher you have hired to teach your children in that work? .If you are not interested in the matter, how much interest can you reasonably expect her to manifest? leutenant General Adna R. Chaffee and Brigadiér General James F. Cro- zler were entertained at luncheon by T.ard Mayor Pound of London. The Yellowstone Valley, The Yellowstone Valley, near Billings is just now coming into special prominence on account of its different irrigation canals. The Billings canal, east of that town, waters an extremely fertile district, in which alfalfa is a very prolific crop. East of Huntly, on the Crow Indian reservation, which will probably be opened in 1906, various canals are planned by the United Statesgovernment, | g which will water a large tract of this very fertile country. Plans are being matured for the erec- tion of a large beet sugar factory at Billings, which willadd to the prosperity of this part of the Yelowstone valley.
