New York, Oct. : —The strike of the drivers employed on United States mail wagons in this city, which has been in progress for several weeks, was settled during the day. An agent of the union announced that the men would receive advances in | neighbors and acquaintances of the wages of 25 cents a day for double teams and 15 cents a day for single teams, which, he said, was a practical compliance with the demands of the men. They were also granted other concessions regarding overtime. Attempted Murder and Suicide, Chicago, Oct. {.—Victor Walkow- ski was detected by his former land- lord, Frank Garowski, while he was trying to remove his trunk through a window. He fired three shots at Garowski and, believing he had killed him, ran to the street and shot him- self twice in the head, dying instant- ly. Garowski was not injured. Army and Navy Hospital. Springfield, 1lI, Oct. { —Dr. Louis Declermont of Washington has. se- cured an option on 640 acres of land at 3250 an acre at Illiopolis, this coun- ty. On this land the government con- templates building a $400,000 hospital for the army and navy. The hospital will be for treatment of bowel and stomach trouble. Albany, N. Y., Oct. 3. asking the court of appeals to grant a reargu- ment in the case of Albert T. Patrick, now condemned to death for the mur- der of Millionaire William Marsh Rice, ex-Senator. David B. Hill, in his brief submitted to the court during the day, lays emphasis upon the fact that Judge Gray, who wrote the prevailing opinion ' against Patrick, has a son, Henry G. Gray, who is an assistant district attorney in New York, and that this son participated in the prose- cution of his client. On account of this relationship Mr. Hill argued that Judge Gray should not have sat in the case and called attention to the fact that without his vote the court would have siood evenly divided. Crew Escapes Uninjured. Alpena, Mich., Oct. er P. H. Birckhead, coal laden, from Asbtabula, O., to Racine, Wis., was burned at a dock here.
