REPORTS of the Britt-Nelson prize fighh of Saturday all agrees in one thing—that it was Nelson’s brute ability to take punishment that won the fight. His strength was greater than Britt’s, that was all. To quote from the re port of the fight: The Calfornian tried every blow known to him and he ap- parently knows them all, to stop his tirelsss oppouent. In every way he failed. Itis true Britt punished Nelson severely, knocking him down once and staggering him sev- eral times but he was never able to beat him back. ... This tireless persistance. and his marvelous dis- regard of physical punish- ment won the fight for Nel- son. » There are few of us who do not admire a contest of strength and cleverness. But if this last prize fight is a thing to judge by prize fighting is nolonger athing wf cleverness; it is simply a matter of brute strength, - Prize fighting is to determine, hereaf- ter, not which man is the best fighter but which man can en- dure the most. For this reason and no other is it that Champion Jeffries must retire; there are none strong enough to stand against him. Now let our men of science find a way to measure accurately the brute strength of a man and our prize fighters will not need to pummel each other any more. They can simply step into the measuring machine, drop a nickel in the slot, and wait for the card that announces the champion. The Cost of Insurance. THE Equitable Insurance com- pany scandal has deyeloped a {|number of interesting facts in connection with old line insur- One of theseis the fact that itlast year costthe New B | Yoric Life Insurance company 8 | more money to secure its new business than the business itself amounted to. Such a condition of affairs as this, cannot look very good for either the assured or the investor. It seems that the big insurance companies rely up- ou the premiunms paid the second and following years for their profit and for the funds with which to meet death losses and profits payable tothe assured. Even the premiums of the second year go largely to agents and it is said that the policy holder is {of no profit to the big line com- Pioneer panies until the third year. In- asmuch as the number of lapses the first and second year is enor- mous, itis evident that much of the new business which the big companies secure isa lossand a detrimenc to the policy holder. If the Equitable investigation does nothing more than force re- forms in the method of managing land operating old line companies it will be a great blessing to the man who insures his life. Brinkmar, Bemidji, Minn. Dear Sir: The way to reckon the cost of paintis to put both costs together; the cost of the i paint and the cost of putting it on, It would save this country hun- dreds of millions of dollars a year; it would save you alone (if you happen to be victim) several dollars a gear, See how it works. It costs as much to put-on one paint as an- other, dou’t it? Yes, if you use the same num- ber of gallons. Well, don’t I? gallons of adulterated paint as of Devoe; and you've got to pay twice as much for putting it on, Mr. N. Avery, Delhi, N.Y., has two houses alike and both in same condition. Painted one house with Deyoe, 6 gallons. Painted the other house with a paint that was half adulteration; 12 gallons. Same painter, Geo. Gilbert, did both jobs. One cost $27; the other $54.
