SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Ezra G. Valentine. THE death of Ezra G. Valentine removes from northern Minne- sota one of its foremost men, a man to whom this section of the| country owes no small portion of its rapid deyelopmeng. Mr. Val- entine was a lawyer of ability and became well known in his profession before -he entered political iife. In fact Mr. Valen- tine’s political life was but an in- cident in his career, Harly in his experience in northern Min- nesota he saw the need of drain- ago and set himself to accomplish something along this line, He gave his best efforts freely and spent his money liberally; it this he had no thought of political re- gards; he was but a_private citi- zen giving his best for the perma- nent upbuilding of the country in which he lived. Because of these signal services to this part of the state, office was, however, thrust upon him, and he was compelled to undergo several political campaigns much against his will. Mr. Valentine’s efforts gaye the drainage movement a vigorous forward movement and when that movement seemed about to die out for lack of a little money, he gave of his money. Probably no one man, except it be James J. Hill, has given so much money to the cause of drainage in Minnesota as Mr. Valentine, When the state drain- age ditches were about to become utterly useless because of the lack of funds to keep them in order Mr. Valentine gave a thou- sand dollars to have them put in condition again, and later this gift was repeated. =~ While Mr. Valentine has not been lately much in public eye his death nevertheless removes a valued citizen from the state. PerHAPS the greatest. agency in the development of a country next to man himself is the rail- way, and in the northwest the Great Northern railway has al- ways been the leader in this work ot development. Its recent vol- untary reduction of grain rates througheut the entire northwest is but one more example of the efforts of this road to further the permanent prosperity of the great northwest. | Russia says that she has grant- ed everything that Japan de- manded before the war began and thinks that is enough. Japan has spent millions of money and thousands of lives to bring Rus- sia to this point and will probably be willing to spend a little more to bring Russia to the point of paying for a war for which it alone_is tojblame. SEVERAL newspapers are mak- ing a desperate attempt to define graft as distinguished from boodle. Graft is the general, boodle the specific, term. PLAN DEATH FOR QUEEN. Attempt Made to Kill Mother of Ital ian King. Turin, Aug. 22.—News has been re- 2 ceived that an attempt has been made to assassinate Queen Margherita, mother of King Victor Emmanuel, who is making a tour of the Alps in an automobile. The dispatch asserts that the queen 1 mother was ascending the Little St. Bernard in her automobile, accom- anied by the Marquise di Villa Ma- rina, another lady of the court, and two gentlemen, when the machine sud- denly struck against a stone barricade ihat had been erected in the middle!3 of the road and was overturned. No one was injured, but the occu- pants were greatly alarmed. Police in an automobile were following the party and at once made an investi- gation, resulting in the discovery that the barricade had without doubt been placed there to bring about a fatal accident to the queen. Two arrests were made on suspicion. GREAT DAMAGE TO CROPS. Severe Storm in Portions of Wiscon- sin and Minnesota. La Crosse, Wis., Aug. 22.—A severe wind, hail and electrical storm swept over the country north and west of here during the night and great dam- age was done in its path. In some cases the storm took the form of a tornado, while in others the rain was a cloudburst. Hail completely ruined the growing crops in large sections of Western Wisconsin and Southern Min- nesota. , Traffic on the Milwaukee and Bur- lington roads was completely de- moralized. At Weaver, Minn,, a large section of the Milwaukee and St. Paul tracks were carried away-and mail trains are running over a temporary track and are from five to seven hours late. The washout on the Bur- lington was between Maiden Rock and St. Paul and has delayed all trains from three to six hours. Satisfied for One Cent A Word FOR SALE.
