THE Red River Valley is put- ting forth its utmost efforts to secure diversified farming. Be]- trami county, though by many years a newer country, already has it. An interesting communication from Mr, A, O. Johnson of Tur- tle River is published elsewhere 1n this issue, showing what has been done in the line of diversi- fied farming inTurtleRiver town- ship. Other articles of this kind have been published frequently in these columns, so frequently in fact, that could they be brought to the attention of real estate men, of the state immigration bureau and of intending settlers, all doubt as to the quality of Bel. trami county soil and of the re- sults which may be secured from it would be at once removed, But slander sticks. The great mass of people believe that Beltrami county lands are jlittle better than a sandy waste. Noth- ing but a éystematic course of education will ever eradicate this opinion. The Pioneer has for years endeavored to carry the truth to the outside world and the other newspapers of the county have been faithful in and out of season, It is about time that the rest of the people of the county gave some aid to the newspapers in this work. What is needed is a Beltrami county organization to advertise the re- sources of the county and partic- ularly its advantages as a farm- ing country. Such an quadruple the population of Bel- trami county inthe next five years. Isit.not well worth the money, the time and the labor? organization can CONGRESSMAN BUCKMAN says that he will pay if the state tim- ber board after an investfigation decides that he has committed trespass. So the board decides it will investigate, Queer some- body did not think of this simple proceedure long ago. But we forget, it was quite necessary for polifical reasons to institute suits at law, even though there was no hope of making thema success. Bob Dunn, you know, did not sue. He made settle- ments and put the cash in the state treasury. This meshod while very profitable to the state was not according to the strict letter of the law as we learned during the campaign last year. But now the strict letter of the law having proved exceedingly unprofitable we are going back to Bob Dunn’s method. Fearful and wonderful are the ways of politics! THE Minnesota State Fair is doing a great deal to make Min- nesota the hub of the horthwest. It has become a great exposition of the resources of the north- west and at the same time it has been so successfully managed that it is upon the soundest finan- cial footing. It attracts exhibits and visitors from every part of the northwest even to the Pacific coast states while the East has begun tolearn that itis atthe Minnesota State Fair that it can Pioneer| arn o,éas‘yan quick what the West is doing. - THE newly organized Red River Valley Editorial = Asgociation onght to be a very good thing— for the territory included as well as for the newspapers them- selves, The association is sup- posed to embrace the ninth con- gressional district but asa mat- ter of fact it covers only the north end of the Red River val- ley. a section whose interests are absolutely identical, Regular Meeting of Council July 31t 1905.
