THE base ball excursion at low rates to Hibbing tomorrow af- fords the people of this city an opportunity to see the biggest iron mine in the world and to ob- serve something of the greatiron industry which is fast making Minnesota one of the first min- ing states of the Union. The Messabe mine at Hibbing is the largest iron mine in the world and an opportunity to in- spect it will alone be worth more than the low cost of‘the trip. But in addition to this, the excursion gives a splendid chance to come in touch with the iron industry| in Minnesota. People who live in this section have a faint idea of the great and growing impor- tance of Minnesota’s iron mining industry. Not only is the iron output of Minnesota now furn- ishing the world with its chief source of supply but iron mines are constantly being developed and it appears thatina few years the production of iron in Minne- sota will be enormous. Hibbing is a charateristi¢ iron mining town and a visit there will amply repay all trouble and expense, Practical Education. Tur address of Superindent Hoverstad of the Crookston Ex- perimental Station before the Beltrami County Teacher’s Sum- mer School this morning sounded the note of the practical in edu- cation. It is quite generally recognized that our schools are not as practical as they should be, We are constantly striving for better- ment in this respect and we are making some progress, but there has got to be a radical change be- fore we shall begin to be at all satisfied, We have long said that manual training must go hand in hand with mental trainiog but we are very slow in finding a way to apply this principle in actual school work, The Pioneer earnestly hopes that in the establishment of the branch school of agriculture of the university at Crookston, suthorized by the legislature last winter, Mr. Hoverstad may be left free to work out his ideas along the line of practical educa- tion for we are contident that he will be able to accomplish some- thing that will bea notable con- tribution to the cause of educa- tion. 5 BusINESS conditions at the present time throughout the country might possibly be better; but not much. There is no great overflow of prosperity but there is a great tidal wave of prosper- ity which is steadily mounting higher and higher. Theabsence of boom indicates that there is no ireaction threatening while the steady growth of businessaugurs for good times for several years to come. IX counties where the superin- tendent of schools does not re- ceive a salary of more than $1,- 400, the county commissioners may grant as much as $250 for expenses to the superintendent, but the commissioners may law- fully refuse to allow the same, according to an opinion received by J, W. Olson, superintendent of public instruction, from the attorney general, Tents for Bible Conference.
