THERE is no newspaper pub- lished in the small cities of the northwest that has a better news service than the Pioneer. Its publication of the census figures in advance of any other paper in the state strikingly illustrate that fact. In October 1904 the Pioneer laid claim to a populgtion of 4,157. When the count was completed in June it predicted that thefpopulation would be close t04,500. Thelactual official fig- ures arej 4,357, sof that the Pio- neer estimates are proved sub- stantially correct. The complete returns were given in both daily and weekly editions of the Pio- neer 48 hours inladvance of any other publication in the state. Support of a Band. A GOoD band rightly conducted is one of the most valuable ad- vertisements that any town can have. = A conspicuous instance of such a band, conducted for several years on business princi- ples, is the Crookston City band. An annual report of the condi- tion of thissband has just been made, and in view of the recent organization of the Bemidji band and of the attempt to put it upon a sound : business footing, the Crookston report is interesting in its entirety.
