When you think of any thing being made of steel the first thing that comes up in your mind is, that it has strength and durability. Yet why is it that stove pipes and smoke pipes are not lasting now like they used to? AMUSEMENTS l “0ld Arkansaw.” Miss Emilie Woodward’s por- trayal of the “country slob”— “Mary Slocum’ is beyond ques- tion one of the most enjoyable features of “Old Arkansaw ” This is Miss Woodward’s third season with the company and it would be impossible to improve upon her work in this difficult Her make-up as well as her reundition of the character is all that could be desired. Her specialty creates roars of laugh- er and encoreafter encoreis a nightly occurrence. Miss Wood ward has been prominent among the comparatively few first-class character women in this country for several seasons and her por- trayal of this difficult role has put her in the very front rank. Personally Miss Woodward is a very charming woman and her appearance in this partis another evidence of the “artof make-up.” “‘Othello.” role. “Othello,” as presented at the City Opera house last night by William Owen and his supporting company, was a vivid rehearsal of the old Shakespearian tragedy and was well received. J. W. Mc Connell as the Moor carried his part through with an ease and grace indicating great stage ability. *‘Iago,” the villian, was taken by Mr. Owen, who played the role of the crafty schemer with great success. Miss Rey- nolds as “Desdemona” is appar ently an actress of much experi- ence. The other members of the company supported those in the leading roles effectually and the presentation here was all that could be expected. ' Mid-Summer Excursions.
