Would it pay? “Royal baking powder, after being advertised for 36 years in in every paper and in every is- sue, was capitalized for $20,000- 000. Approximately $19,000,000 of that great sum, according to Lincoln Steffens, was in one in- visible, bus tangible asset—pub. licity. SELF-CONFESSED FORGER. Political and Social Leader of Man- kato, Minn., in Trouble. Mankato, Minn, May 23.—Judge John B, Ogle, one of the most promi- nent political and social leaders of this city, who recently attempted suicide, turns out to be a confessed forger. He has admitted that he got some $7,000 from Thomas O. Jones, a local moneyed man, to loan out and had used it himself and given Jones forged notes in return, supposed to be signed by a number of Mankato people and properly endorsed. Ogle was engaged in money loaning and insurance business and Jones let him have more than $9,000. Only one of the many notes held by Jones is known to be genuine and that is one for $600 given by Ogle himself re- cently. Other people also let Ogle have money to loan, including several widows, but it is not known in what shape they are left. His total debts, including his forgeries, so far as known. now, run up to nearly $20,000. Ogle has been special judge for some years and has taken a leading part in politics. His Bather was a Methodist preacher and he has been prominent in church work and sanz in the choir. County Attorney Wilson states that all claims against Ogle will be paid. RELEASED ON §$20,000 BAIL.
