Wehave heratofore noted the fact that it. has become an exposition of the resources of the northwest, an institution which sets forth comprehensively the. wealth and possibilities of what is ‘destined to be, perhaps, the greatest industrial and commer- cial section of the American con- -tinent:. . > To properly display at such an exposition the resources, pro- ducts and industrial activities of any particular extentof territory is an advertisement of that terri- tory whose exceeding value can hardly be estimated. Northern Minnesota, a wide fterritory little understood and much wisrepre- sented, where peculiar conditions obtain; should no longer neglect this opportunity to properly dis- play its advantages and to cor- rect numerous false ideas which have obtained wide acceptance as to the character of this coun- try. A systematic and complete ex- hibit of the resources and pro- ducts of northern Minnesota at the state fair each year will re- sult in bringing hundreds and thousands of people here to be- come settlers and developers of| a rich and beautiful country. Such an exhibit requires the united efforts of the people of northern Minnesota and there is no one thing which will so mater- ially and rapidly advance the in- terests of the section as such an effort carried to a successful con- clusion. Soak’Em! THE inquiry now in progress by the state railway and house commission as to railway rebates in Minnesota is quite in teresting. It appears that the indepen- dent oil shippers in Minnesota competing with the Standard Oil company and shipping oil in bar- rels must pay freighton third class matter while the Standard Oil company, shippingin tank cars, gets a fifth class rating. The tremendous advantage this gives to the Standard Oil com- pany isillustrated by the cost of shipments to Wadena. The Standard company admit tedly 2 atank car from Minneapolis to Wadena for $74.55, This taak car contains 120 bar- rels The independent companies, doing a smaller volumn of busi- ness, haveto ship in barrels, One hundred and twenty barrels will fill two (s:t—rs, and with $21.20 the cost of returning the barrels, brings the expense of the ship- ment to Wadena to the indepen- dent dealers at third rate to $179.60. In other wdtds every indepen- dent oil company operating in Minnesota has a handicap of $103.05 on every car of oil it sells in Wadena. If this is not fixing rates so-as to give one company a monopgly of the oil business in anesofa what is it? ware- BorH Rojesvensky and Togo remember that. he who runs away ‘may live to fight - another day.
