FvERY loyal Minnesotan is pleased to know “that the move- ment, to portrzy the grand charge of the First Minnesota at Gettys- burg on the walls of the new state capitol on Wabasha Hill has been completely successful and that the actual work of gath- ering the materials for this heroic picture is now under way. The charge was one of the most sublime recorded in his- tory. It was certain death for the bare hope of saving the day and the nation, The men of Min- nesota died and the day was saved. Such a subject isa fit theme for a masterpiece and Minnesota does well to spare no expense that this brave and glorious deed of its sons shall be fittingly set forth on the walls of its stateliest building. It is, however, a matter for re- gret that the picture is to be painted upon the walls of the gov- ernor’s reception room. Magni- ficent as is this room, it is not, it seems to us, the most fitting place for so grand a picture. Only a fraction of the visitors to the state capitol enter the gov- ernor’s reception room and the picture should be placed where evéry eye can see it. Surely there must be in the halls of the great granite pile some spot where such a painting might suit- ably be placed and where it would be a delight and a constant reminder to the people of Minne- sota of what the state’s heroes did at Gettyburg. A HIBBING woman sues the vil- lage health officer for $20,000 be- cause he told her it was measles when it was small pox and now she is not so pretty as she used to be. She will have wrinkles in her face, too, before she gets that twenty thousand. MINNESOTA’S murder reccrd for the post twelve months has been a terrible one. Perhaps no year in all its history has seen so many awful murders. THOSE of us who have neither the ability nor the opportunity to steal a million and a half might as well make a virtue of it. He says: “Two years ago I had kid- ney trouble, which caused me great pain, suffering and anxiety, but I took Electric Bitters, which effected a complete cure. I have also found them of great benefit in general debility amd nerve trouble, and keep them constant- ly on hand, since, as I find they have no equal.” All druggists guarantees them at 50c. 2 Magical Scenes in California. MEN FELL FOUR HUNDRED FEET ROPE SNAPPED WHILE THE WIC- TIMS WERE DESCENDING TOsTHEIR WORK. ‘Wilkesbarre, Pa., April 27.—Ten miners. were instantly crushed to death during the day at the Conyng- ham mine of the Delaware apd Hud- son company located in thz northern part of the city. The men were being lowered into the mine and when 350 feet from the surface the rope broke and the cage fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 400 feet. A res- cuing party was at once organized. The bodies of the men were found at the bottom of the shaft heneath a mass of debris. They were terribl mangled. Most of the victims lived in the vi- cinity of the mine and when the res- cuers brought thé crushed forms to the surface a large crowd was in wait- ing. The grief of the relatives of the dead was heartrending. Superintendent Foote says he is at a loss to account for the accident. An examination of the rope was made be- fore the first cage full of human freight was lowered into the mine and it was found to be all right. William Cunningham, who is sald to be one of the most reliable men in the employ of the company, was the engineer In charge of the hoisting carriage. He says everything went well until the fatal trip. He got the signal to lower and to stop at the Hillman vein, which is 350 feet from the surface. When the Hiliman was reached he slowed up. Without any warning the rope snapped and the carriage containing the ten men dropped like a shot to the boitom. The carriage had all the safety appli- ances and its speed should have been checked before it reached the bottom, but as far as can be learned the “catcher” did not work. Eight of the dead were Poles and the two others English speaking miners. CIGARETTE SMOKER TO SUE. Tobacco Trust Provides Money to Test Indiana Law. La Porte, Ind., April 27.—Chester. Bell of Delaware county, arrested for having cigarette papers in his pos- session, will bring action for $25,000 for false imprisonment. ‘The purpose of the action is to test the cigarette law, and similar suits will be brought in other counties of the state, the American Tobacco company of New York, it is alleged, providing the money with which to wage the fight.
