THE day’s news brings us the intelligence that the employees of the late Jegislature have form- ed an organization which they have dignified with the appella- tion of the “Republican State League,” This is hard on both the re- publican party and on the state. What can be the purpose of such an organization except to prey upon the state? Infact it is “The Road With The Big Berths” This is the title given by the Chicago Tribune to the CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE & ST. PAUL RAILWAY This railway owns and operates its own sleep- ing cars and other equipment. The berths are wider, longer and higher than berths in similar cars of other lines. HOFF gw?fib;krffizefif AR .| ment. frankly admitted that it is the in- tention of the promoters of the organization to make it “a power in state politics.” Everyone knows that the prin- cipal business of the employees of the legislature is to draw money from the state for ser-| vices which they have rendered to various members in election. If the legislature were a private husiness institution, three fourths of the employes would be out of a job and the other fourth would have their salaries cut in two. The organization of such a body with the avowed purpose of be- coming “a power in politics’’ is a nice thing for the people of the state to contemplate. No Primary Legislation. THE prediction made by the Pioneer at the beginning of the legislative session of 1905 that the primary election law would remain practically unchanged for another two years has been made true, and it seems for the rea- sons then given in these columns. The principle of the election has come to stay and while there is great dissatifaction with many features of the law, it appears that experience has not been sufficient to enable us to suggest changes upon which we can all agree. Thelaw remains almost absolutely the same, the changes being of minor significence, and will therefore be given a third test under the same conditions which have prevailed in the past two elections. The legislature appears to have followed the rule:, When in doubt, do nothing. THE U. S. land department has made a ruling that it is strictly against the law to sell intoxicat- ing liquor on lands that are taken from the government for settle- The punishment for an infraction of the ruling will be the loss of the land to the settler. Such a ruling will probably have a solutary effect as the risk will be greater than a homestead- er will care to assume. I TAKES Minnesota to get to the front.
