The Pioneer calls attention to a commurication in this issue from Henry Funkley in regard to rates for hauling wood on the Minnesota & International. This is a matter of vital importance to the people of Beltrami county. The matter was discussed at length by the Business Men’s Club of this city a year ago and some correspondence was had with the officials of the road. We believe that the timeis now ripe to secure {ayorable action-by the road on the appli- cation of the people of this county for a reduction of the rates.” The position taken by Mr. Fuokley is a reasonable one and we are confident that if the matter is taken up with the officials of the road they will so view it and will act accordingly. Under present conditions the settlers of Beltrami county are deriving but little benefit from their great wealth of timber, and the same may be said of the rail- roads. If these conditions con- tinue the magnificent timber areas of Beltrami county will neyer proiit anyone. There is common ground here on which the railways and the people of Beltrami county can get to- gether. United action to this end will accomplish something that will be of great advantage to this part of the state. The steady growth of Bemidji is emphasized by the constant demand for more school room. Despite the commodious quart- ers provided by the big central school building it is found that ;u more reom is imperative and the school board has submitted to|iL3 the people the proposition of bonding in the sum of $10,000 to provide additional and more con- venient school facilities. If the issue is authorized the buard proposes to borrow the money from the state school fundand thus secure the low rate of four per cent, PBITSINORTH! ¢ 1% % | COUNTRY 4 THE meu Band concerts at Akeley. —0— Potato congress at Moorhead. —0— Election leaves Lake Park, toc, high and dry. —0— A wicked trust makes herring high in Bagley.
