THE regular village caucus will be held this evening and itis reasonably certain that the great ‘majority of those named at the caucus will be elected as city offi- cials for the ensuing year. The most important selections to be made are those of council- men. The present council have made an enviable record an we are persuaded that practically the whole people of the city are convinced that it has discharged its dutizs with ability-and econ- |omy and that the adminstration of the city during the past year has been all-that those who de- sire the good of the city as against private greed could de- sire. Thus far there has been evi dence of opposition to the mem- bers of the present council in but two instances. Mr. A. A. Carter is urged asa candidate for the council on the part of the people of the northwestern part of the city. His ability and in- tegrity is established beyond auestion and he would make a most excellent alderman. A number of business men have also proposed the name of A. E, Smith as a candidate for record- er and all that has been said of Mr. Carter may be resaid with equal force of Mr. Smith. So far as known this concludes the list of possible candidates so that in any event the city is as- sured of a business men’s coun- cil. THE serious illness of Mr. L. H. Bailey is a matter of deep con- cern to the people of this city, and the prayer of every heart is that he may eventually be re- stored to health and strength. Mr. Bailey is a man of ability and vigorous personality and has since coming to Bemidji been markedly influential in the up- building of the city, and Bemidji can ill afford to lose a citizen of his calibre. THE only hope that the univer- sity and the normals now have for freedom from the board of control lies in the house. Itis high time that the legislature) putan end tothe selfish- fight which the institutional towns have waged thus far on the board of control and settled the whole matter on broad lines. The present condition~of affairsisa shame to the state. Ir Russia is still anxious to fight there is every reason to be- lieve that she can be accommo- dated. It BEGINS tobe doubted wheth- er Mr. Commissioner Garfield is a chip off the old block. A team hauling a load of cord- wood stopped with the wheels of the wagon in a deep rut, and all the whipping and swearing by[ the driver proved futile in start- ing the procession again. One of the horses was balky, and the look of savage resignation on the face of the driver certified to the fact. He sat back in his seat, impatiently waiting their pleas- ure. A man driving a pair of light, shop-worn horses drove along side of the load and halted. “Your team is on a strike, I see,” he said. No. Just resting,” “Why, they aint got enough to need a rest.” “Wheels are in a hole—they can’t pull ’er out.”’ “Rats. My team aint half as big yours, but I can hitch them to that load:and haul it out.” “I’ve got a dollar that says you can’t.” “I’ll take you,” cried the new- comer. He sprang out and be- gan to unhitch his team. Just then the balky team decided to adjourn and off they started with thq load of wood, the driver turned to the man on the grouud and roared: “The bet is off, Mr. Smatt.y, but the offer is still good. You said you could hitch your team to this load. If you had tried to hitch oo, I would of smashed your face. I didn’t bet on your team but I was betting I was a better man than you. If you still think you can hitch your team to this load, just follow me up and try it. That cussed hoss has worked me up till T would be willing to pay a dollar for the pleasure of gitting licked.” § THE CHURCHES §a No preaching services at the Presbyterian church tomorrow. E. A drunken woman was taken in charge by the night police at an early hour this morning and confined in the city jail, after- wards being brought before Judge Pendergast, who imposed a fine of $1 and costs and in- structed the woman to take the first train out of the city. The entertainment given last night at the school by the mem- bers of the Sophmore Junior class was largely attended and netted the class a neat sum. Various games were played and several musical selections were rendered, after which a light supper was served. Pat Sullivan, who has been em- ployed as overseer of the cutting at J. A. William Schaffer, a brakeman of Dennison, Ohio, was confined to his bed for several weeks with inflammatory rheumatism.
