THE Scanda Hail Insurance company is a concern which flourished in Polk cr)ui)by some years ago; it lived one brief year and did a big seasons work col- lecting premiums. This duty proved so arduous that it- hadn’t | the strength to pay its losses in the fall. Tts affairs wer: closed up the other day and it paid the farmers who put their trust and their money in it, ten cents on the dollar. This concern was a typical hail insurance company, typical throughout its career, a wild cat hail insurance company, born with big promises, gathering premiums easily and plentifully and paying ten cents on the dol- lar, Tt'and other like it have taken thousands of dollars from the farmers of the great north- west; but that is not the worst, for these companies have invari- ably failed whenever a hail storm made necessary the paying of their obligations. It was to prevent the organiza- tion of just such companies that Senator Stephns hail insurance laws were passed two years ago and the legislature, if it cares to protect the farmers of the wheat growing sections of the state, will see to it that these laws are incorporated in the new code be fore that code is adopted. Will Murder Out. THE terrible crimes of murder which have been committed in Minnesota one briel twelve months are appalling in number as well as in the horrid ferocity with which the murder- er has despatched his victim. Never has there been such a year for murders in Minnesota as the past; never before were there sn many, never before were they more brutal and never be- fore have so few of the guilty been brought to justice. What are we to think? Is it no longer during true that murder will out? A dozen ' murders have been com- mitted in Minnesota in as many months in which absolutely no clue exists by which the murder may be made to answer to society for his heinous crime. More than that in many of these cases the authorities have practically given up all lope of finding the guilty parties and in several in- stances it seems-certain so far as finite knowledge goes, that the perpetrators of these crimes will never be known, much less. pun- ished. This is truly a most deplorable and alarming state of affairs. Minaesota has need of the coun- sel of its wisest that this state of to an end. THE making of many creeds and their rapid propogation is illustrated again in the - state spiritualistic association ' which has just held a three day session at St. Paul with an attendance of over two hundred members from the state outside the twin cities.
