THE iegular biennial attempt is being made to lengthen the terms of all county officers. It is safe to say that the at- tempt will fail; that it will never become generally a success, for we are generally distrustful of long terms. We prefer the evil of frequent election to the evil of unsatisfactory officers whom we cannot discharge for a long term of years. Under our present system of state government, the office of auditor is perhaps the one which most directly and in the great- est number of ways affects the interests of the whole people. The office is heavy with the re- sponsibility and the man who has seryed two years has but barely became qualified to discharge the duties of the office efficiently. By the end of his second term he has became an invaluable offi cial, hut by the unwritten law of succession, he is then usually re- quired to give way to some one else.
