The St. Cloud Journal Press gives the following summary of the senatorial situation, which we beleive is fairly correct: “Moses E. Clapp has served in the senate four years, and so sat- isfactorily that his candidacy for re-election was unanimously en- dorsed by two Republicap state conventions.” “Moses E. Clapp is a man with big and generous nature, who loves peace and harmony, and by these same tokens is not a shrewd politician, as the world uhder- stands the phrase. So far ashis public record is concerned there is certainly little to criticise and much to commend. He has an- nounced himself in accord with President Roosevelt and public opinion on the imporiant issues before the people, and while he did it somewhat tardily, there is no decent reason to doubt his honesty of purpose, or that he will be faithful to the people’s I BUY NOW i Many fine Lots may be had for $100 and up. Gilfillan was for sev- eral years a most able and effici- ent state senator, and served one term in congress with credit. He is a man of high character, and despite his advanced age, would serve the state faithfully if elect- ed. But no one beleives that he will be elected, or that he stands even the slightest chance of be- ing elected. He is serving just now as a convenient fort for the Minneapolis deleé,ation to take refuge in until the lines of ‘battle become more clearly defined.” *‘Samuel R. Van Sant in some ways resembles Senator Clapp. He is a man of the people, genial, popular, ambitious and a poor politician, On the absorbing issues before the people he has the advantage of any other mén in Minnesota. He is the man who blazed the way—who called a halt on corporation evasion and defiance of the law and the nation heard.” ‘‘Joel P. Heatwole is a politician. Heis feared more than he is loved, but he has a machine of his own, and although he is a pri- vate citizen, seems able to keep his henchman well suplied with the useful elements in machine politics: - There are those who are unkind enough to say that he is in close touch with the cor- porations, and is their most use- ful servant. For proof is cited his interest in the Babcock speak- ership contest two years ago, and in the gubernatorial cam- paign last spring. He prides himself on being an Indian in politics, and is out to defeat Clapp. Ifhe can get the sena- torship himself he would be mightily pleased, but if he can D. s DENNIS’ Located in Pingle’s Blacksmith . hop, two block 710 America Ave. . They made these pledges to win their election, in many cases. We are not ready to be- lieve that enough of these pledges will be broken to defeat Senator Clapp.” To this it might be added that the list above l;y no means ex- hausts the possibilities.
