Pitkin of Crooks ton was in the city last night and left this morning for Kelliher, where she will visit her husband for a short time. Allan Huck, formerly night depot, has resigned his position and is now employed as clerk at the Markham hotel. John Patterson and Robert Forslund returned this morning from the homestead of the latter which is located about twenty miles east of Blackduck. A. E. Underwood of Solway is in the city today. Mr. Under- wood expects to leave in the near future, for Northwest Territory, where he will engage in business. F. J. Kline returned to the city this morning from Black- duck, where he has been looking after the interests of the Walker & Akeley company, of which he is superintendent. The Polk county grand jury last night returned seventeen in- dictments and there is racing and chasing and much worriment in Polk today as a result thereof. He worked for the Crookston Lum- ber company from September 1 to November 15, 1903, but since then all trace of him. has been lost. Grand Rapids, Minn., Dec. 17 —A jury has been obtained in the Gardner murder trial. Gardner is charged with killing William Garrison, a homesteader, last July. It is said the men had frequently quarreled and Gard- ner, it is alleged, went to Garri- son’s home and shot him. The accused man has been in jail since the crime, bail having been refused. Gardner is defended by C. C. McCarthy. A number of Duluth and Superior business men arrived last night to testify regarding the character of the accused man. Gardner has| scores of friends all through this district, who have promised him every aid possible. Mr. A. R.
