Yesterday’s fire was one of the hardest to fight which a fireman can have. A brick veneered building, the Pioneer is informed, is classed next to a powder house for difficulty and danger in case of fire. It is plain praise to say that the Bemidii fire department yesterday did nobly in their ef- forts to control the fire in the the Swedback block. Hour after hour the fireman were compelled o toil through smoke and chilling wind. For almost twelve hours the entire department was on duty and during the first five hours of that time the duties of the individual fireman were ar- duous and dangerous. Hvery thing that man could do to save property and to prevent the spread of the fire was done by the fireman and their praises are today on every man'’s tongue. Bemidji has great occasion to congratulate itself upon so faith- ful and so capable department of volunteer fireman. No READER of twin city papers can fail to have remarked the fact that the same sort of an at- tack which was made upon Mr. Dunn has now been begun upon Senator Clapp. The same insid- ious misrepresentation of politi- cal news which was so success- fully used against Mr. Dunn has been begun against Senator Clapp and we predict that it will not be many days before the twin city papers are teeming with all sorts of charges against the sen- ator and with all sorts of stories of his weakness. It remains to be seen whether the people will allow themselves to be the second time so easily fooled. So FAR as personal qualities go, democratic John A. Johnson, governor elect of Minnnesota is as far superior to such men as Van Sant, Collins and others who made his election possible as the A Beautiful Display of 2 Chinaware and Glassware | just received at THE FAIR. Naturally Mr. Johnson is glad tobe goverror, buthe cannot stomach the means that were used to put him there and he declares this week in his St. Peter Herald, “Robert C. Dunn was abused as few candidates be- fore him have been.” OFFICIAL returns show that the republican nominee for gov- ernor had a majority of about 2,000 outside of the twin cities, and of about 500 outside of the strong republican county of Hennepin. One reason why Min- neapolishas never been able to ob- tain the political plums that its size and importance would nat- uaally entitle it to is that the City | yoa is uniformly determined that if it cannot have what it wants, no- body slse shall have what they want. THE Duluth News Tribune in a forceful-and timely editorial calls attention to the growing evil of the demand for irrigation, There have been few newspapers with sufficient moral courage to tell the truth about this matter but the News Tribune is one of the few. Irrigation is a press- ing want through vast regions in the west. but it is utter injustice that the nation should spend mil- lions for irrigation and nothing for theequally great needs of other states which do not need irrigation. 3 VAmoiJs mugwump newspa- pers, having vented their spleen T HE Newspapers are paid to advertise our customers as well as ourselves and therefore according to their showing, everybody sells the best and cheapest article of the kind in the market. Peoria, Ill, Nov. 26.—The answer of Kingman & Co. to the charges brought by C. A. Jamison, for- mer vice president and general man- ager of the concerns, has been filed in the circuit court. The answer admits the questions of fact, such as the for- mation of the different companies, but denies categorically any illegal action on the part of the president, or the other members of the corporation, de- nies that they have juggled the books and accounts of the companies or that any conspiracy was ever entered into by the president or any members of, or men associated with the different corporations bearing the name King- man, to defraud Mr. Jamison or gain control of his stock. The answer prays that the bill filed by Mrs. Jamison be dismissed and de- nles that Mr. Jamison now owns any of the stock of Kingman & Co. AUSTRIAN SUICIDES AT SEA. Distracted by Grief He Jumps From an Ocean Vessel. New York, Nov. 28.—Driven to des- peration by the plight of his wife, who, he had told his fellow passengers, is under arrest at Hamburg, charged with child murder, Dernetei Boni, a steer- age passenger, jumped overboard from the steamer Graf Waldersee and was drowned. The suicide was reported when the steamer arrived here from Hamburg. The officers of the Grat Woaldorsee said that Boni appeared greatly distressed when he boarded the steamer and drank heavily. Last Tuesday he jumped overboard, and, although the steamer was put about and a boat was sent in search of the man, he was not found. Boni was an Austrian, about thirty-six years of age.
