HITCHCOCK. ‘ntered fu the postoffice at’ Bemidji, Minn., as second class matter, Otficial County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR We'll Celebrate Thanksgiv- ing Day, Alright, Alright. Duluth News Tribune: The Bemidji Daily Pioneer, in addition to having one of the best editorial columns in the state for direct- ness of expression and independ- ence of thought, is a news marvel. Where its staff manages to accu- mulate the daily number of live news stories that it publishes, is a wonder to exchanges. Bemidji must be a live town, as Mr. Hitch- cock is alive newspaper man. The Day We Give Thanks. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. It isa good day, one of the best days of the whole year, and when you come to think about it there have been some pretty tolerably good days ouf of the 366 of the past year. And Thanksgiving Day is an Ameri- can day; others may use it, but we made it. More than eight millions of people will tomorrow do honor to the spirit of Thanks- giving Day and in the plentitude of things which they will find to be thankful for there will be none more worth while than the day itself. We are mighty thankful for Thanksgiving Day. Time to Tighten the Screw. There seems to be ascrew loose somewhere in Minnesota’s penal system. During the past nine months the state has been the scene of repeated murders of the most brutal type. Not a week passes that the news of some horrible murder, or some brutal attempt at murder, does not shake the|- state from the Iowa line to the northernmost tip of the north- west angle. What are we going to do aboutit? Is this sort of thing going to keep right on? Beltrami county, which has sinned so greviously in this re: spect, bears no heavier burden of guilt than do many other sections of the state and it begins to ap- pear that human life is held almost in contempt in Minnesota. Is it that convictions are so seldom secured that the mur- «| der is encouraged to satisfy his bloody passion? Or has the hang- ing noose no terrors? Whatever it be, it is apparent that Minne- sota’s- penal system is terribly ineffective. The pulpit is wont to broadly give some attention to the gen- eral public weal on Thanksgiving Day. There is no more fruitful subject than this for the mor- row’s sermon. ARE we mistaken or is so much capitol talk in anticipation of the asking of another million for the new state house? Well, as for ourselves, we shall be well satis- fied if the stately building does cost another million. SoME republican newspapers are worrying for fear that the new state capitol building will be dedicated by ademocrat. They should have done their worrying a little earlier. WHEN our three governors pulled up their sleeves and spat on their hands right in the face of the railroads, it was fine stuff for the newspapers. That’s all. —_— MiNNESOTA ' did the right thing in withdrawing its cham- pioncenter, after Northwestern’s “|says: eleventh hour protest, al under thé conference ru = HE Newspapers are paid to advertise our customers as well as ourselves and therefore according to of the kind in the market. their showing, everybody sells the best and cheapest article We do not blame the City papers for making these smfements, ag it is their business to adver- tise all their customers to the the buyer to choose for himself. We have such confidence in their excellence that we ghamn- tee every article we séll. We cannot all sell the best. Wehave too much modesty to claim that we only sell the best, but if persons deciding to purchase a stock of goods which they can feel justified in knowing are perfect in quality should give the undersigned a call, they would be shown just sucha line as we mention.
