There are few states in the Union that have entered upon so liberal a school system as has Minnesota. . We have found that our liberality in foundingand in supporting schools for the people has paid and paid largely, and we are continually encouraged to attempt greater things for edu- cation in Minnesota. Outside of their pride in Minne- Sota’s maryelous school system there is a personal interest which Bemidji has in the extension of that system which should not be overlooked. Minnesota now has five normal schools, schools whose purpose is to train teach- ers for the actual work of the school These mnormal schools have been strikingly suc- cessful and by reason of this fact the fifth normal was recently es- tablished at Duluth. The other normals are located at ‘Winona, room. Mankato, St. Cloud and Moor- head. Spread out the map of Minnesota before you and you will discoyer that southern Min- nesota has two of these schools, south central Minnesota one, while the great territory from Brainerd north has one school on the extreme eastern bodndary of the state and one on the extreme western, The wide territory north from a line running due east and west from Moorhead to Duluth, a territory embracing one third of the great state of Minmesota and a territory of which Bemidjiis the geographi- cal and railway center, has no normal ‘school at all. It is only a matter of time be- fore Minnesota will locate its sixth normal school, thereby equitably supplying the needs of the whole state, 1f the people of Bemidji are alive to their inter- ests that sixth normal will be lo- cated here. It is the logical point aad an ideal location. It needs but the open eye to secure this state institution for Bemidji. rEeran N Growth of Beltrami County A Dbrief reference to election returns will show some interest- ing things as to the growth of Beltrami county. In the first place the total vote cast in. Beltrami county this year is nearly 100 votes greater than the total vote cast in the united counties of Beltrami and Clear- water two years ago. L] § b World’s Fair Prize. In the second place the vote cast in Beltrami county this year is almost exactly one half of the vote cast in Polk county. Polk county is oné of the big counties of northern Minnesota, embrac- ing about 60 townships. .No county of northérn Minnesota is more thickly settled, no counfy is older, none more adapted to rapid development. That Bel- trami county, with its thousands of acres of undrained muskeg and with "section on section of virgin forest, should cast a vote one haif as great as that of the populous county of Polk, speaks of a rapid and substantial growth during the past few years. HERE is a significant echo of the state campaign in the Winona Republican: ' One of the remark- able things about the state cam- paign just ended is that Judge John A, Lovely was defeated, his own county giving him less votes than Dunn, = It was for the pur- pose of boosting Judge Lovely their showing, everybody sells ! Bemidji, W. G. Schroeder, Minnesota. had not accepted the Democratic nomination. if there would have been a Johrson ticket. It is the irony of fate that while Johnson pulls through, Lovely is sadly4 defeated by Republican votes. This shows that ii is better to ac: cept defeat gracefully at the hands of the party convention than go to the people with a grievance and be turned down. No man especially an officeseeker eyer made anything by bolting his party, and this lesson will come with a dull, sickening to more people than Mr. Lovely as time rolls by.
