There is no daily newspaper. in Minnesota in @ town of the size of Bemidji that publishes one half of the live news pwb- lished, by the Pioneer. We are confident that it is the appre- ciation of the newsiness of the Pioneer which -has cauwsed its subscription list to swell so rapidly during the past year and more. Two remarkably sweeessful popularity contests held last December and May respectively added hwndreds of names to the Pioneer’s lists of subscribers. It is now more than six months since the last of these contests was held but during that time, when no special, effort has been made to add to the list of subscribers, the Pioneer’s circulation has steadily grown. Every ob- serving person knows that the . circubation of the Pioneer cov- ers practically the wholeof the. city—yow camn see a Pioneer box on the front or back door of nearly every howse in town. We are now pleased to amn- nounce that the circulation of the Daily Pioneer outside of the city exceeds its circulation in town. The value to the business men of Bemidji of such a mediwm for advertising pur- poses, both direct, to the people of this city and neighboring towns, and indirect, as adver- tisement of Bemidji to the outside world, can with diffi- culty be estimated. A word, to the wise business man should be sufficient. Not only will the fight on the board of control be a desperate one but it will be a formidable one. Every institutional town in the state will rally all its forces for the attack, and all the institu- tional towns put together, with the governor, the most powerful official in the state, will be able to put up a pretty brisk figcht. . There can be no question of Mzr. Johnsen’s opposition to the board of control plan, although his opposition was kept as dark as possible during the recent campaign. During his term in the senate he strove by every means in his power, first to de- feat the bill, and then to repeal it. Mr. Johnson is himself from institutional town, St. Peter, where the state hospital for the insane is located, ands'no one has been more bitter in oppo- sition to the board of coutrol pol- icy than have the people of St. Peter. Happily, however, Gov- ernor Johnson’s power will be au can bring to to bear against the act. His veto power is use- less in this instance. The act is already upon the statute books, No wiser législation than that ' fereating the board of control was ever enacted in Minnesota, but | the institutional towns, following | the policy of self interest, wish a return to the old system of sep- arate boards for each institution, to the end that they may each| fatten at the state’s expense. - The legislature. will doubtless for the third time emphatically approve of the board ‘of control this winter.
