The Big Game Season. |- " The big game season was well | ‘|named. Its principal purpose seems to be the thinning out of populatién. Fourteen deaths are reported for Minnesofa, Wiscon- sin and Michigan as a result of the first day’s hunting of the big game season. The big game season indeed! -What to do to put an end to this horrible sacrifice of human life is a problem. Laws havebeen passed providing for the punish- ment of the offending party even where it is clearly shown that the shooting is accidental and en- tirely unintentional. But where | shall we find a jury that will con- vict that Cass county father of the murder of his son? The father is today more fit for the asylum for the insane than for the penetentiary. Minnesota ‘hunters have this year gone to the woods quite gen- 1 |erally dressed in red and this is perhaps the only thing that can be done to prevent the loss of human life during the big game & 2 In All Parts of the City. p OS ; In All Parts of the City. § ¢ Bemidji Townsite & Improvement Co. & JOHN F. John Hay, President Roosevelt, since his reelection, has made two notable announcements—that he would not be a candidate for reelection in 1908 and that John Hay would remain as his first cabinet officer. John Hay'is one -of the fore- most living Americans. Diplo- macy hath_its vietories no less renowned than those of war, and some of the greatést of them have been won by John Hay - for the American people. No. diplo mat of today has had a more splendid trainiag than has Mr, Hay for the responsible duties which devolve upon the secretary of state and his is a master mind which has been able to cope on equal terms with the greatest diplomats of the old world and ta wrest success from them. Theodore Roosevelt, John Hay and the American soldier and sailor form a triumvirate that commands the respect and atten- tion of the civilized world. BeMIDJI certainly needs a more adequate system for turn- ing ina fire alarm. Within the past two weeks there have been two early morning fires and in each case it. was impossible to notify the fire hall of the fact for a considerable space of time. Sucha delay may at any moment involve Bemidji in a loss of thous- ands of dollars and the urgency of the need for better protection in this respect demands immedi- ate action Ifit is not possible atonce to installa modern fire alarm system other steps should be taken to make iotification of fires more prompt and more cer- tain.
