PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. By R. W. HITCHCOCK. Tntered in the postoffice at Bemidji, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR An Inglorious Victory. By the registered decision of the people of Minnesota, John A. Johnson, democrat, will be the next governor of the state. The result was accomplished by the disaffection of rvepubli- cans, by lying, slander and a campaign of villification unpar- alleled in the annals tics. The man who has rendered greater services to the state than any other of its sons has been basely requitted. The man who by every influence at his com- mand has labored to destroy Minnesota’s most cherished in- stitutions is rewarded with the highest office in the gift of the people. The man who knows more of Minnesota’s needs and whose name is a household word in Minnesota because he has championed the cause of the common people, is rejected while the man who finds favor in the eyes of great corporations and whose ignorance of state mat- ters would be laughable were it not so serious is chosen. There is small comfort for the people of Minnesota in yester- day’s election. of poli- Beltrami Does Nobly. Returns at hand at the pres- ent time indicate that Beltrami county will go for Robert C. Dunn for governor 809. The Pioneer takes no little sat- isfaction in this fact. We are frank to say that we far prefer to support Mr. Dunn and be beaten than to support the man who has been elected and win with him. The Pioneer is the original Dunn newspaper in northern Minnesota, and while we are far from claiming all the credit for the compartively large vote given the republican candi- date in Beltrami county, we be- lieve that the Pioneer has been one of the factors in securing that vote. The day will come and that soon when the republicans of Minnesota will be ashamed of the part they have played in this campaign. Beltrami county will then, in comparison, with the other counties of the state have little to reproach itself with. by about Internal Dissentions. The Pioneer regrets that the republicans of Beltrami county have not been better able to agree among themselves and that so many who were defeated at the primaries were unable to take their medicine like men and give their unqualified support to the party. There is some excuse for this, inasmuch as the primaries were a farce, republican candi- dates being nominated by repub- licans and democrats indicrimin- ately. Nevertheless, the better way would be to support the party ticket and to move for a re- peal of the law which makes such a thing possible. The Pioneer is practically the only newspaper in the county which gave unqualified support to the straight republican ticket. Many of the republican nominees were not our original choice, but being nominated, they deserved our support, and they got it. ‘We congratulate the republican party on its substantial victory, under adverse circumsta.nce;, in Beltrami county. The Pioneer hopes that he will make a better governor than any that has preceeded him and to this end it pledges Mr. Johnson its hearty support and co operation in whatever little it may be able. It wouLDp be hard to find a man in northern - Minnesota to- day who has good to say of the present primary election law. The law in its present form ap- pears to be leading us into the gravest political dangers. There will undoubtedly be made a radical change in the law by the legislature this winter.
