The campaign just ended has been a long oneand a damaging one to the business interests of the country. That business has suffered no more than it has is evidence that the tide of trade is still flowing strong throughout the country, About a year ago there were heard the first mutterings of an active opposition to President Roosevelt. ‘Wall street was op- posed to his re-election and it de- termined to put forth an effort to defeat him for re-nomination. To that end it began a syste- matic attack npon the business interests of the country. Had Roosevelt not been so strong, there might have been a mild fi- nancial panic. But Wall street soon discovered thatit was at- tempting the impossible, and it abandoned open warfare. At about the same time the state campaign for gover- nor began to open and it is safe to say that few states have been so torn with political dis- sension as has Minnesota for the past year. Every business man will rejoice that the campaign is ended. With its end there is evidence that business will begin again with renewed activity and that the immediate future will be a most active one in the business world. Now that we have got done electing other fellows to office, maybe we shall have alittle time to spare for our own affairs. There is the matter of good roads out of this city into the country for instance. The Pioneer is aware that the city has already done something in this direction but we are persuaded that ten times as much and more can be done with profit. There are few things that will bring a town as good returns as good roads|Z built into the country. They are a means of fastening the country trade to the city for eyer and their influence in settling and de- veloping the country tributary to acity is in proportion to the length and excellence of the roads. The size of the territory which a town may annex is also in the same proportion. This will be a most fruitful matter for the Business Men’s Club to in- vestigate this winter, AT THE recent session of the district court for this county there were four murder cases. In three cases in which a human life was taken no conviction was secured. In addition during the past year there have been seyeral mysterious disappear- ances under circumstances that lend ground for suspicion that murder has been done. Is this thing going right on in Beltrami county? Are kves to be taken and the murderers go unfound and unpunished forever? Are we going to sit still upon the im- putation that Beltrami county is not a safe place to live in? Isit a safe place to live in when such conditions obtain? Ifany county in the state ever needed a hang- ing, Beltrami certainly needs one. A Runaway Bicycle. Terminated with an ugly cut on the leg of J. B. Orner, Frank- lin Grove, Ill. The finest quality of granulated loaf sugar is used in the manu- facture of Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, and the roots used in its preparation give it a flayor similar to maple syrup, making it quite pleasant to take. Mr. W. L. Roderick, of Poolesville, Mad., in speaking of this remedy, says: “I have used Chamber- lain’s Cough Remedy with my children for several years and can truthfully say it is the best preparation of the kind I know of.
