HITCHCOCK. “ntered in the postoffice at Bemidji, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Up to The People. The campaign for the general election, national, state and county for the year 1904 is practically at an end. The cam- paign, so far as many of the states of the union is concerned, has been the most strenuous since the foundation of the re- pubic. In the Nation. The issues between Roosevelt and Parker has excited but com- paratively little interest and this is undoubtedly due to the fact that people are well satisfied with present conditions, and there are not many who dispute the re- election of Theodore Roosevelt tomorrow by a large majority in the electoral college. The State Campaign. Politics have been at a fever heat in Minnesota for more than ayear, The fight for the re- publican nomination for gover- nor was a most bitter one. The same personal animosity and the same impersonal hatred on the part of the big corporations has made the republican candi- date for governor, Hon. Robert C. Dunn, the target for the vilest and most unreasoning attacks. No campaign in the nation, since its beginning has been marked by such disreputable tactics as those employed in this campaign against Mr. Dunn. One by one these attacks have been snown to be the most . astrocious fase- hood; but no sooner has’ the truth showu the falsity of each low charge, than another, more infamons than its predecessor has been sprung. On so low and mean a level has the opposition to Mr. Dunn conducted its cam- paign that in the frenzy of its madness it has caused the vilest slander against its own candi- date for governor to be pub- ished b roadcast over the state. The majority of Robert C. Dunn tomorrow for governor will measure the rebuke of the people of Minnesota to those who pursue such disreputable tac- tics. The Man Who Does Things The republicans of Minnesota offer a candidate for governor who is more worthy to be gov- ernor thah any other man in the state. His record as the best state auditor that the state has ever known stands today un- challenged even by his oppo- nents. He had rendered greater services to the state than any other living man. He is the au- thor of most of the great laws which have marked Minnesota as one of the most progressive states of the Union. He knows more today about the state of Minnesota, its resources, its pos- sibilities, its needs, the bestand most economical methods of ad- ministering its business than any other man in the state. Such a man is Robert C. Dunn, republican candidate for governor of Minnesota. Then Look on This. The contract with the man who opposes him as the democratic candidate for governor of Minane- sota is very striking. For six years John A. Johnson+as been a member of the Minnesota state senate, and today at the end of the campaign there is not even a democrat in the state who can mention any public service which his candidate for governor has|® Flour! Not only has John A. Johnson never done anything for Minnesota but he has done every thing in his power to defeat the very measures upon which the permanent prosperity of the state depends. He voted and worked and spoke against state drainage, he voted against the bill to prevent the desecration of Memorial day, he voted and lobbyed against the board of con- trol bill, he sneeringly denounced appropriations for good roads as ‘“‘money spent for bicycle paths.” ‘What sort of a governor would this kind of a man make anyhow? The Company They Keep. But aman or a party may be | known by the company they keep. The democratic candi- date two years ago took stump and voted for Mr. Rosing the merger candidate for governor, the man that the railroads spend money like water to elect. The democratic candidate is support- ed this year by the great twin city dailies owned by great cor- porations, by the Great North- ern Railroad, by the Soo, by the twin city street car lines, by the twin city jobbing and wholesale houses. That is the kind of com- pany John A. Johnson keeps. |2 Mr. Dunn the republican candi- date, is opposed by every monied interest in the state. His election is going to be accomplished by the farmers in the country and the day to day toilers in the towns and cities. That is the kind of company he keeps. One candidate is a man who has rendered inestimable ser- vices to party and state; the other, a man who has done what he could to prevent any legisla- tion calculated to benefit the state. One is a man who is acknowledged to be the best posted man on state matters within the state, the other, a man whose speeches show that he does not comprehend what such great policies as drainage, gross earnings tax, goud roads, etc. mean; one has repeatedly proved himself the friend of the common people of the state, the other is aided and supported by the great monied interests of the state. It is up to the };eople to say which sort of a man they want to serve them as governor of the state. 0000000000000000: : When R. C.
