Otficial County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Judge vs. Attorney---Editor vs. Candidate. The opinion which a man gives when he is entirely disinterested is much more worthy of general acception than _that which he gives when his self interest is touched to the quick. John Lind, the governor, dis- passionately announced in public upou various occasions when called upon to pass judgment that Mr. Dunn was an efficient state auditor; John Lind, the paid advo- cate of the democratic candidate for governor in opposition to Mr. Dunn, with all the arts of a clever lawyer, insinuates quite different. John A. Johnson, the editor, writing dipassionately for the ed- ification of the public, commends in marked terms the administra- tion of the state auditor’s office by Mr. Dunn, but John A. Johnson, the candidate for governor, bluntly says that he was as much mistaken about this as he was about all the great policies of the state which he opposed while in the senate. Whom shall we believe? The governor passing judgment or the paid lawyer arguing for his client? The editor upholding the truth or the candidates pleading for yotes? something A Market Day. The success of Bargain Day in Bemidji this week has resulted in considerable discussion as to the advisability of establishing a per- manent market day, one day in the month—a day when farmers might come to the city with their produce and be provided with a place to dispose of it and a day when the merchants of the city might offer special inducements to buyers. The Pioneer has approached a number of business men and a number of farmers in regard to this matter, and the idea meets with emphatic approval. It would be a splendid thing for Bemidji, building up the surrounding country and binding it closer to the city, while at the same time it would offer decided advantages to the farmer. The matter is one that it will be well to give immediate investi- gation and the Pioneer commends it to the consideration of the Business Men’s club through whom a profitable plan may be putinto operation at an early date. The Plague of Lies. The closing days of the state campaign in Minnesota are being marked by a perfect avalanche of lying slanders aimed at Hon, R. C. Dunn, republican candidate for governor. There is nota day that does not bring forth a new brood. Never in the history of any state has there been such a campaign—where every day the newspapers and the mouths of his opponents teem with the most}villianous fais hoods. Every one of them have haye been re- peatedly disproved — most of them out of the mouths of Mr. Dunn’s forcmost opponents—but the morrow will doubtless bring forth another batch. No Jie has been to_vile in this|; campaign not to be rolled as a sweet morsel under the tongue of Mr. Dunn’s opponents. ‘We shall see next Tuesday just how successful this sort of a campaign is with the American people.
