Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR The Pioneer was the only paper in Minnesota, outside of the Twin Cities, which published a com- Dlete, detailed account of the Min- nesota - Nebraska football game Saturday evening. Johnson and Good Roads. John A. Johnson, the Demo- cratic candidate for governor, in commenting upon a speech made by Rovbert C. Dunn, the Republi- can candidate for governor at at West Duluth, Aug, 26, notes the Crookston Times, sneered at a statement made by Mr. Dunn regarding the necessity for good roads in mnorthern Minnesota. Apparently Mr. Johnson failed to comprehend the facts and figures quoted by Mr. Dunn at that time or to appreciate the im- portance that the construction-of good roads is for the settlers of the partially developed counties in the northern part of the state. Mr. Johnson passed off the ques- tion with a flippant remark that ““the bicycle people would take care of that.” Mr. Dunn on the other hand, expressed himself as strongly in favor of securing bet- legislation to enable counties and townships to construct better roads where needed, and in the speech referred to he said: “The only state fund available for the improvement of roads is the in- terest derived from the internal improvement land fund of about $280,000 and the 5 per cent of the proceeds of the sale of govern- ment lands; the receipts of the latter source will diminish grad- ually as the area of the public lands decreases. This fund is frittered away among the several counties of the state by piece- meal appropriations and the pub- lic derives but very little benefit therefrom. In my judgment this fund should be used for the con- struction of roads in the sparsely settled districts. A conscitu- tional amendment adopted in 1898 which provides for a tax not exceeding one-twentieth of one mill was a bungling piece of leg- islation, and the legislature has failed to act under it. UNLESS John E.King of Red Lake Falls, democratic candi- date for secretary of state has changed his opinion since Feb- ruary 10, 1904, he believes that Robert C. Dunn made the best state auditor Minnesota ever had. Inthe Red Lake Courier, Mr. King's paper, onthe foregoing date he paid Mr. Dunn one of the ‘warmest tributes that the former state auditor ever received. Among other things, Mr. King said: “Robert C. Dunn seems to come in for a lot of praise from prominent men of all political parties. Mr. Dunn made the best auditor the state ever had, and every person familiar with the work of thatoffice cannot help admiring the position he has taken with reference to mat- ters affecting the people of the state.” IN REGARD to the reports made by Public examiner Sam- uel T. Johnson as to the accounts and business of the state audi- tor’s office during the adminis. tration of R. C. Dunn, after all is said and done, there is nota word or a charge which has been sustained that shows that the state ever lost one dollar in money or one acre of land through any action of Mr. Dunn; but on the other hand it has been shown beyond dispute that the THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER— OCTOBER 31 Flour!
