Sntered in the postoffice at Bemid)i, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Foe to Board of Control. For two sessions of the legis- lature a desperate fight was made against the board of con- trol bill, and in the fore front of the opposition was John A, John- son, now democratic candidate for governor. The following from the Glenwood Gopher is much in point. “When the bill to establish the Board of Control was before the legislature in 1901 Senator John A. Johnson facetiously termed it “Bob Dunn’s Pet Bill” and as he himself admits, tried to encom- pass its .defeat by every device known to the statute parliamen- tarian. In spite of Johnson’s de- termined opposition, however, the bill passed and became a law. After three years trial the Board of Control has proved to be all that its friends hoped for it and by its efforts the tax-payers of of the state haye been sayed hundreds of thcusands of dol- lars, and that in spite of the big advance in the price of fuel and other commodities necessary for the maintenance of the state’s various institutions. The Board of control law put an effective stopper to the ‘local graft’’ of the institution towns, of which St. Peter was one.” A vote for Mr, Johnson means a vote against one of the wisest and greatest policies ever inaug- urated in Minnesota. Two years ago Beltrami was for its population the banner republican county in the state. Every republican should get to the polls this year and cast his vote for the republican candidate for governor in order that Bel- trami county representation in future republican conventions shall be as large as possible. This representation is based on the vote for governor and the bigger the republican vote for governor in Beltrami county this fall the more influence the county will haye in the councils of the party hereafter. ROBERT C. DUNN is pre-emi- nently the manin Minnesota who has thought out and secured the passage of laws which are mak- ing Minnesota the admiratiou of the other states in the Union. John A. Johnson is the man who has uniformly opposed every great law placed upon the statute books during recent years. Be- tween two such men it ought not to be hard to choose. & THE growing enthusiasm for Dunn in southern Minnesota is so pronounced that the hostile Twin City papers, despite their best efforts cannot keep it out of their columns. THERE seems tobe a question in this campaign whether a Swede isa Swede first and an American next or vice versa. IT 18 probable that Doc. Ames does not contemplate the begin- ning of his fourth trial with any great degree of alarm. Ata public meeting held at the Baptist church Oct. 23rd, 1904, the following was expressed as the unanimous sentiment of the meeting: “We believe that the opening of the proposed ‘var- iety theatre’ will be a moral blot upon the reputation of our town, and a curse to the lives of the young; adetriment to the wel- fare of its peoplein general as well as to the growth of the town and to its business prosperity. Therefore be it resolved, that we, citizens cherishing Beminji’s highest interests, pray that the honorable president and village & council refuse to permit the opening of the said ‘variety theatre.’” Signed, J.
