HITCHCOCK. “ntered in the postoffice at Bemidji, Minn., 3 as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR A Year of Progress. Itis one year today since the present management took charge of the Pioneer. An effort has been made to give Bemidji and north central Minnesota a daily newspaper brimming with the life of a resourceful, rap= idly developing country, a newspaper which should every day be a thought compelling advertisement of the possibilities and the growth of this great section of a great state. The people of Bemidji and of this entire sec- tion of the state have been quick to appre- clate the value of such & newspaer and { have so liberally accorded it their support that the Pioneer is today the leading daily and weekly newspager in northern Minne- sota. A newspaper reflects the condition of its constituency—whatever success the Pioneer has achieved is simply an indication of the abundant prosperity of the people of north central Minnesota. By His Deeds Ye Know Him. During the first session of the legislature abill was introduced providing that on Memorial day no games or sports such as foot- racing, horse racing, base ball etc. should be held within a halt mile of the grounds upon which memorial services for the na- tion’s dead were being held. The vote in the state senate upon this biil was 86 ayes and one nay, and the man who voted nay was John-A. Johnson, today democratic candidate for nor. And yet they want the old soldier and the old soldier’s sons and grandsons to vote for Mr, Johnson. Shall gover- THE heads of all the railroads centering in St. Paul are work- ing night and day against Rob- ert C. Dunn, all of the big twin city dailies owned by great cor- porations are opposed to Mr. Dunn, every wholesale and job- bing house in the state is making its traveling men talk against Mr. Dunn. Why? Because ev- ery year during his term as state auditor Mr. Dunn appeared be- fore the state board of equaliza- tion and secured an increase in the assessed vyaluation of the property of thesegreat interests. Itis no wonder that they are bending every energy to defeati Mr. Dunn MAJOR J. M. BOWLER, former- ly democratic candidate for lieu- tenant governor and the tempor- ary chairman of the democratic state convention at Duluth, has announced his intention of sup- porting Robert C. Dunn for gov- ernor since it has been clearly shown that Mr. Johnson the demncratic candidate is sup- ported by all the big corpora- tions of the state. Major Bow- ler heads a club of Minneapolis dewocrats who will vote for Dunn. The club was organized last Friday and there were 100 democrats present at the organi- zation. THE season for big game will open as soon after election as we get the returns counted and the government safely settled for a few years more. A few deer will fall, a moose will be brought down here and there and the usual number of men will be killed. If it were not for the latter there would be no use in cuilling it the “big game’’ season. MINNESOTA has taken enough gold medals at the World’s Fair to distinguish it from the other states of the Union. A recent award isa gold medal for flour while Minnesota has won three fourths of all the butter scorings at the fair and the state’s claim to the title of Bread and Butter state is pretty firmly fixed. Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused ists plentifully in street dirt. 1t is inactive so long as exposed to the air, but when carried beneath the skin, as in the wounds caused by percussion caps or by rusty nails, and when the air is ex- cluded the germ is roused to ac- tivity and produces the most vir- ulent poison known. These germs nay be destroyed and all danger of lockjaw avoided by ap- plying Chamberlain’s Pain Balm freely as soon as the injury is received.
