Minnesota has one of the best school systems m the world, and it islargely the result of the state board of education law, pas- sed some ten years ago. This law grants the state aid to certain schools which reach a standard sefi by the state board of educa- tion. The board, under the pro- visions of the act, have engaged inspectors, who travel from school to school throughout the state, and give the schools the benefit of their wider knowledge, and see that the standard set is maintained. This plan has re- sulted in building up an expert educational department in charge of such schools as high schools, graded and semi-graded schools and the results which have been obtained have been so pronounc- ed that Minnesota’s system has attracted attention from all of the other states of the Union and the school system of sev- eral states has been patterned af- ter that of Minnesota, The success of Minnesota’s system is emphasised by the fact that Minnesota has just been awarded the grand prize for the best elementary educational ex- hioit at the World’s Fair at St. Louis. In addition to the grand prize the state also secured a gold medal for its secondary edu- cational exhibit and eight other medals. All this should teach the im- mediate necessity of extending the state’s system to the rural schools of the state, and the legis- lature this winter should see that this is done. HENNEPIN county republicans have never been able to agree among themselves long enough to secure anything from the repub- lican party which their import- ance in the commonwealth en- titles them to. Just now they areengaged in a desperate at- tempt to wreck the republican party and if Minneapolis could have its way today there would not be enough left of the repub- lican party after November 8, to be worth patching together again and calling a party. The contest seems to be the same one that ex- isted in the state convention— the city against the country. If Hennepin county republicans get anything from the party dur- ing the next ten years it will not be because they deserve it. THE demand for state or county road on the rangeline south from Beaudette is one that should be met with all possible dispatch. -|The road will be a paying in- vestment for the county. County Surveyor Stoner has de- clared that the fees which the road would save the county would pay for it in two years while the development of the county would be materially assisted and the in- dividual settlers benefited more than it is possible to say. The difficulty of communication with the northern boundary of the state makes the road also a state necessity and the state could as- sist liberally in its construction, THERE is but one opinion, ex- cept in degree, as to the advisa- bility of sccuring the construc- tion of the old Red Lake railway .| south through the county to Be- midji, and those whohave most fully investigated the route which such a road musttake are the most firmly. persuaded of the benefits which Beltram! "It seems reasonable to believe that partylines will not be so close- lydrawnintheelectionnext month asin past years. Inthefirstplace the independent voter grows each year more numerous, in the sec- ond place therais really but one ticket in the fieid in Beltrami county this year, which makes the drawing of party lines pretty difficult, and in the third place the primary iaw has got the voter into the habit to thinking princi pally of the candidate. It isalto- gether likely that there will be fewer ‘‘straight” tickets in the election of 1904 than ever be- fore. $100 Reward, $100.
