Cass Lake is to be congratu- lated upoun securing its own once again, in the decision of the in- terior department to return to it that large tract of mnorthern Itasca lands which was added to the Duluth district some time ago, but the settlers living in the territory and the settlers yet to come are more to be congratu- lated. -With the territory in the Duluth district the settlers in this fertile region were put to agreal and unnecessary expense of time and labor and money in orderto make their filings and their final proofs. They were compelled to come to" Cass Lake and go yet 160 miles further on in orderto transact their land business. Except in degree the interior |department might as well abolish all land offices and compel the settler to go to Wash- ington. The business of the land de- partment of the United States government isall conducted at long range which probably ac- counts for such egregous blund- ers as this one of putting north- ern Itasca in the Duluth dis- trict and keeping it there for months and only returning. it after the expenditure of great ef- fort on the part of those directly interested.- IN NO county of the state was the primary election more inter- esting than in the county of Clearwater. There were fifty- seven candidates in the field—one candidate for ever ten votes. They were all dead in earnest, too, and they made {life a burden for few who were not candidates. The successful” candidates are nominated by very narrow pluralities. This is Clearwater’s first experience and two years hence there will probably be fewer candidates and a simple contest between *‘the court house gang” and the ‘“we want-to-be-a- court-house-gang.”’ PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT has served notice on the trusts that they might as well not apply to him any further in this cam- paign and has notified Chairman Cortelyou that there must be no ‘‘understanding’ whatever with the trusts. This may be regard- ed as an ultimatum and the big trusts ufmy now carry their cam- paign contributions to demo- cratic headquarters and save themaelves a lot of unpleasant publicity. THE board of equalization has increased the valuation of agri- cultural implements in Beltrami couuty 20 per cent and on thresh- ings machines 80 per cent—or perhaps we should have said, threshing machine. APOSTLE DOWIE has issued an expurgated edition of the foot ball rules. Alexander will prob- ably find that his foot ball games | will also be expurgated—as to spectators. Now it is the tobacco trust that threatens President Roose- velt if he will not be good. The people of the country should put this in their pipe and smoke it. THE University of Minnesota has a reputation for being Phoenix-like and it will rise from the ashes grander and bétter than ever. - Subscribe for the Pioneer and et the news, i - |and liver froubles and ‘all forms FBITS NORTH E?fi?%|00UNTRY 2l 2 2B 2B e 0 e B 2B B The Gang is dead,- long live the Gang! o e The rummage sale will get you if you don’t watch out. = T —o— “Mr. Loud, of Bemidji, was also heard from,” says Miss News and Comment. —0— Northern Minnesota will log a lot on the reservation of prosper- ity this winter. —0— It seams'almost desecration to put up a common vulgar saw mill at Pokegama. —0— Englewood and Forest Grove and Evergreen is the kind of country they have up Mizpah way. —0— tion and calls it Maple Park which is fetching enough of it- self to compel prosperity. —o— Allowing for the rate of in- crease as shown in the primary vote Beltrami county will cast about 10,000 votes in November, —0—.
