Iv a long statement issued yes- terday and certified to by State Auditor Iverson,Robert C. Dunn answers the charges made against him by the state public examiner. The statement is a plain, unvarnished presentation of the law in regard to timber trespass and mineral leases and the method®in which they were handled by the state auditor’s office during Dunn’s administra- tion. It reveals to the public the state examiner as a blundering, 1gnorant, malicous ass who has wasted thousands of dollars of the public moneys putting to- which he is the densest ignor- ance. The state public examin- were it not so pitable. The long report of State Pub- lic Examiner Johnson is devoted almost exclusively to citing in- stances of mineral leases which Mr. Johnson “suspects’” were office. Thousands of dollars, millions of dollars, declares Mr. Johnson were thus lost to the state. ment conclusively shows, whomsoever shall apply for them. 1f more than one person applies for the lease they may bid against each other and the lease goes to the highest bidder, but if there is but one application, the lease is sold for $25. Anybody can buy that has the money, the auditor, the woman who washed governor. examiner’s report as ‘“the most a public official”, and cites as follows an instance which holds laughing stock of the state: His gross misinterpreta- tion of such terms as ‘new * cuttings’ reported by the cruisers, which he construes to mean that cutting was made of state timber and fol- lows with the inquiry ‘why the cutting reported was not paid for?”” And the similar construction he places on the terms ‘cut all around,’ ‘cut on the south and east side,’ which also leads him to in- quire why this cutting was rot paid for, indicates his su- preme ignorance of the mat- ter upon which he presumes to sit in judgement. Any person possessing but a slight knowledge of the lum- ber business could have in- formed him that the term ‘new cutting’ means that the timber was never cut into, and that ‘cuttings on east and south’ or ‘cuttings all around’ means that the tim- ber on lands adjoining the state lands had been cut and that in consequence the state timber was in danger of fire originating in the ‘slashings’ on these adjoining lands. Mr. Dunn’s statement takes up in detail the leases and cases of timber trespass cited by Mr. Johnson and shows that in every instance the state was fully pro- tected by him. These cases are certified t§ as correct by Mr. Iverson, now state auditor and formerly deputy state auditor under Mr. Dunn, and they proye that the public examiner simply did not know what he was talk- ing about when he made his re- port. The people of the state are tired of the bitter factional fight which is being waged against Mr. Dunn by a few. republicans As a matter of fact, a fact the windows in his office, or the public moneys by high officials to carry on this fight. Such prostitution of public office to political purposes is the most scandalousin the history of the state. Everything has been done to insure a first class perform- ance of this difficultand intencely interesting play. The company areall capable, and the wonderful drama will be vividly enacted. Do not forget the date Tuesday, Sept. 20. Chas. A. Gay. who plays the ec- centric comedy role of Carpenter Engstrom, in “Ghosts’’, toured the country playing the same part with Mary show all last sea- son, He handles a very difficult part in a thoroughly artistic man- ver. Secure your seats for “Ghosts”. It is positively the dramatic event of the season. The secret of Henrik Ibsen’s work is that he is not afraid to tell the truth. He calls a spade a spade. Heis no hypocrite and in the drama of ‘“‘Ghosts,” he goes to the root of the matterand shows by powerful illustration how the sins of a father are visit- ed on the children. Do not fail to see this sensational play by Laura Frankenfield and a superb company at the Opera House, Tuesday Sept. 20. Emergency Medicines. It is a great convenience to have at hand reliable remedies for use in cases of accident and and for slight injuries and ail- ments. A good liniment and one that is fast becoming a favorite if not a household necessity is Chamberlain’s Pain Baim. By applying it promptly to a cut, bruise or burn it allays the pain and causes the injury to heal in about one-third the time usually required, and as it is an antisep- tic it prevents any danger of blood poisoning. = When Pain Balm is kept at hand a sprain may be treated before the in- flamation sets in, which insures ?3 quick recovery.
