When one stops to think of the number of persons whose eyesight is in some way defect- ive it is astounding how general is the ailment. Italmostseems that everybody has some trouble, greater orlesser, with their eyes. It is believed that the greater number of cases of defective eye- sight can be traced to the school Poor light, methods of study, working over hours, ete. are responsible for much of the eye trouble thatex- ists today. It is well therefore that the state board of health has decided to take this matter up and to make a thorough exami- nation of the eyes of the school children of the state. The ex- amination will be made this year by the state board of health in all cities having a population of 1000 or over. Instructions have been sent out from the board to the superintendents of the differ- ent villages and city schools and the examination will be made by the teachers and reported to the board. Later a second examina- tion will be made and the two tests will afford a basis from which the board will be able to draw its conclusions as to the eyesight of the children of the state. Cards will also be furn- ished on which the teacher may notify parents if the beginning of any eye trouble exists. This action of the state board of health. if vigorously followed out, should work wonders in saving hundreds of school child- ren from the fective eyesight. room. careless misfortune of de- TuE Hon. BELTRAMI county is to be con- gratulated upon the morale of its candidates for nomination at the . primaries next Tuesday. The thirty odd candidates who solicit nomination at the hands of the people are men whose worth has been proved and what- ever may be the rvesult of the primaries the county is assured of an excellent set of officers. The county has been fortunate in this respect in the past and it is fortunate now. THE schools of Beltrami county needs each year a thorough careful inspection to the end that the methods employed by the teachers may be the best known and to the end that in- competent teachers may be weeded outas rapidly as possi- ble. The standard for teachers inanew county is necessarily low ab first but should be raised with all possible speed. THE first of the wheat crop of 1904 is not promising. The wheat is poor, very poor, some of it not fit for milling, and it be- ginsto be feared that the pre- dictions of injury by rust were not all overdrawn., However, the crop still remains to be marketed and thereis room for hope for better results. hiindinaln i ol ab ok b af i b PELISINOR Tflvg 1'% | COUNTRY Brainerd Fair Sept. 26. o The Watonwan fair was ahum- mer.
