In Dr. Lewis L. Mayland of Clearwater county we have an opportunity to elect a man who will be keen to protect our interests because our interests are his interests. Common sense tells us that we should elect a friend rather than a stranger, - Let us stand together. A Significant Fact. Beltrami county has called the past season a dull one, Ithas been so in fact; business has not coursed through this section in quite so full and strong a tide as has been its wont. There is one very siguificant fact, however, in connection with the past nine months. Throughout this period there has not been in this im- mediate section a single failure; not one person has been obliged to take advantage of bankruptcy law. In the few monthsimmedi- ately preceeding January 1. 1904 there were some dozen cases of bankruptey within ‘a radius of 50 miles of Bemidji but during the past nine months not a single case has developed. The tide of business, largely owing to politi- cal causes, has been lower since January 1 than during the nine months preceeding that date, nevertheless, Bemidji and its immediate environment has en- joyed a period of steady pros- perity and the fact is signifi- cant of the future of the city and its tributary country. THE office of county attorney is the most important executive office in the county, and the man who is elected to discharge the duties of that office should be a man who is fair, and free from prejudice, but at the same time a man who is fearless in the en- forcement of the law for the pro tection of = the people’s rights. Every man who knows Attorney John F. Gibbons, who is 'a can- didate for the republican nomina- tion for county attorney, knows that he meets these requirements as nearly as any human being can, and we believe that this is pre-eminently the reason why Mr. Gibbons should be chosen for the office. United with these qualities Mr. Gibbons possesses good ability, thorough knowledge of the law and sound judgement, A man of this kind will fiake Beltrami county a valuable county attorney. —_— ST. That is nothing compared to the job of getting it out again. —0— The Red Lake Courier claims that Halvor Steenerson was elected on a democratic platform last year—but that is ancient his- tory and the matter of platforms is not worrying Halvor this year. Wants to Bet $250. Hibbing has an idea that its ball team, too, is the champion of northern Minnesota and it has 2ot $250 with which to test the matter if Bemidji, Brainerd or Duluth has as much to risk. Hib- bing’s challenge is open to any team in northern Minnesota and it stands prepared to claim the championship if no one accepts. Bagley’s Fine School. Crookston Journal: Farmers of the Red River Valley ~who have any spare time at present, and spare time is very scarce, are getting at their potato crops and t,he Trish tubers vill soon be safely stored in the cellars and root houses of the district. The yield, according to several farm- ers in the city yesterday, will be a great deal lower than anticipat- ed and fair prices should prevail, unless the markets below_ are glutted with the southern Minoe- sota tuber. A great many farm- ers intend to hold their crop un- til spring and nos many have as yet been brought to the city.
