TO IMPROVE MARKHAM Proprietor Hannifin Will Make Extensive Improve- ments to Hotel. TELEPHONES AND BATH TUBS FOR ROOMS. Large Sum to Be Expended In Making Hotel Best In Northern Minnesota. Work will soon commence on annmber of very extensive im- provements in the Markham hotel, and when they are com- pleted the hotel will be modern in every respect and the accom- modations will be of the best. Steel ceiling will be put in throughout and Mr. Hannifin also expects to put in bath tubs and telephones in all the rooms. The improvements in mind will figare up to a large sum, and if carried out according to the plans now under consideration, Bemidji will have a first-class, modern, up-to- date hostelry that will do credit to the city. Mr. Hannifin has had it in mind for some time to improve the hotel, but his decision to go through with the improvements was not made known until today and will be a very pleasant sur- prise to the people of the city. TOMORROW Funeral Over Remains of John Wilbur Hitcheock, Drowned Yesterday. The funeral over the remains of John Wilbur Hitcheock, the two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Hitchcock, who was drowned in Lake Bemidji yes terday, will be held from the family residence on Lake Boule- vard tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. Interrment will be at Greenwood cemetery. Many friends of the bereaved parents have arrvived in the city, among whom are Mrs. A. D. Stevens, Miss Andrea Stephens, and Mr. and Mrs. C. W. New bery, of Crookston, Mr., and Mrs. H. F. Mark of Fosston and Mrs, M. Hitchcock and Miss Edith Hitehcock, of Ada, All the particulars of the acci- dent could not be learned yester- day, butwere substantially as follows: Little Bobbett, as he was fa- miliarly called, was pla, the yard with his brother, Paul, when he started to climb over the fence, a feat he had learned only a few days before, when Paul ran to the house and told Mrs, Hitchcock that his brother was outof the yard. She at once wentto look for him, but could find no trace of him. Merrian Stephens, who is visiting at their home, assisted her in the search, and noticed the baby’s clothes in the lake. The fill- ing of candidates’ certificates before the county auditor has been going on for some time, but it is thought that a number of “dark horses” are yet to be sprung on the public. Every candidate now in the field is using his best endeavors to win the campaign, and trips through the country have been made by a number of the candi- dates. A month and a half remains in which to do campaigning and 1t is thought that before the prim- aries the contests will insome cases become very bitter, but although up to the present time all the candidates seem to have carried on a very clean cam- paign. LOGS ARE FOUND Shevlin-Carpenter Co. Pay As- sessment on 31,000,000 Ft. of Logs. A drive of logs containing 31,000,000 feet has recently been added to the Shevlin-Carpenter Lumber company’s assessment through the efforts of Deputy Assessor J. W. Shadewald, who has been tracing the logs for aver a year. [t was impossible to fix the ownership a vear ago when the assessor’s books were closed, but this year they were traced to the company and its as- sessment mcreased by % ,000. The assessment has been tacitly accepted. The famous Commonweaith Lumber company case is closed, and the judgement of $19,134.20 was paid. The government sued for over $100,000 for cutting green pine from the White Earth reservation under the “dead and down” act. The judgement was less than $19,000, but the costs brought the sum up. Bemidji is considered by the people from the outside as one of the best towns in northern Minnesota. and hardly a day passes but remarks are heard from visitors about the liveliness of Bemidji compared with other towns in this section. Bemidji is quiet now compared with other seasons of the year, but very little complaint is heard from the business men. A GOOD SHOWING Iron Range Telephone Company Pays 9.6 Semi-Annual Dividend. The semi-annual meeting of the stockholders of the Iron Range flectric Telephone com- pany was held in Wadena recently and some interesting facts were set forth at the meeting and the figures showing the financial standing of the company at the present time were yeyy gratify] ing to the stockholders. The Iron Range company was organized two years ago, with a capital of $75,000. For the first ix months this year a dividend of 9. 6 per wi was paid, this dividend being dec¢ at the rvecent eeting, This isa very fine showing and bids fair to be| exceeded during the last half of] the year. W, B. Baumbach is president of the company and in speaking of telephone maiters Monday he stated that his com- pany made perhaps the best record for the past six months of any company in the state. Mr. Baumbach said that ab the present rate the company would probably pay somewhere near 25 per cent for the year. The Iron Range comipany now has 175 miles of line running though the Red River Valley and from Crookston as far east as Cass Lake. There ave five ex- changes on the line, at Ada, Crookston, Bemidji, Cass Lake, and Grand Rapids although the long distance line does not run into the latter named place. In view of the excellent show- ing made it is possible that the FIRE AVERTED Post Office Building on Fire This Afternoon But Blaze is Extingushed. ‘What would have been a very distructive fire was narrowly a- verted this afternoon when a blaze thought to have been started by a cigar stub or match care- lessly thrown between the post- office and Street building was ex- tinguished.. The blaze was dis- covered at one o’clogk and an alarm turned in, but when the firemen avrived it had been put out by people who were in the postoffice at the time it was dis- covered. It has been reported in Bemidji anumber of times that the body of Miss Aagot Dahl had been found, but when the reports were traced out no one seemed to know from whence 1hey origi- nated and were without doubt false.
