Powers of the Police. No more " flagrant outrage against the political fights of the people was ever perpetrated than was attempted Saturday evening at the school election by the police of this city. Policemen rode up and down in carriages gathering up lum- berjaciks and old bums and bringing them to gthe school house to vote. Policemen were stationed m the school house yard, nay in the school house it- self and within twenty feet of the ballot box, distributing tick- ets and instructing lumberjacks and bums how to vote in the mat- ter of the election of members of the school board. The Pioneer has m its po;session abundant evi- dence in proof of these state- ments; in fact these acts were wituessed by scores and hun- dreds. Further; policemen, ranged the polling place and pub- licly warned men not to vote a certain ticket and even went to the length of taking from them that ticket, giving to them an- other and escorting them to within a short distance of the ballot box to see that the ticket given them was voted. If this is not malfeasance in office, what is it? The Pioneer declares that the people of Bemidji are practically disenfranchised; that Tepeatedly the police of this:city have es- corted to the polls and voted enough lumberjacks to carry the election; everybody who lives in Bemidji knows these things to be facts, They are facts so common that we have well nigh torgotten how outrageous they are. Itis up to the people of this city to say whether the police of this city shall be the servants of the people to enforce the law or whether they shall be the hire- lings of politicians to overturn the law. Except to cast his own vote or to preserve order no policeman has any right to be at a polling place. His very presence is a menace to the rights of the citi- In a city like Bemidji, where there is so large a floating population of laboring men and of men who prey upon them, the activity of the police in soliciting and directing voters is more than scandulous, more than merely unlawful. The police are sworn to defend the people in their rights, not. to assist in robbing them of these rights. ‘We much misjudge the temper of the people of this city if they will longer permit the police thus openly violate their oath of office and to so scandalously attempt to disenfranchise the legal voter. The people of Bemidji have been long suffering but there is surely a day of reckoning for such abuse of official power. zen. A Significant Verdlct. The action taken at the school meeting Saturday night is more |- [ momentous than any other that has been taken in-Bemidji for many a month. ‘Whether well rotunded or not, there is a profound conviction us sehools: have nob. been well for improvement in the condi- tion of the schools, It is this conviction which voted by a de- cisive majority to make a change in the personel of the board of education. We hailit as a most healthful sign’ that the mothers and fathers of this city have de- cided to have something to say regarding th» education of their children; they said it in no uncer- tain terms Suturday evening, and we are confident that they will continue to say it plainly and vig- orously from this time on. The uew board of education has a heavy responsibility. Whether the old board has done well or ill, the new board must do better. Itisup to them to put the public schools of Bemidji upon so high a plane that every parent shall be proud and happy to have his children in them. ACCORDING to a local paper the county committee appointed by the Collins wing of the recent county convention is the legally established committee of the republican party and according to the same authority the com- mittee is already bending all its energies to the defeat of every one of the present county officers at the primaries September 20. This is certainly an astounding state of affairs for a republican organ to eommunicate to the re- publicans of the county. *The business of the county committee is to conduct the republican campaign after the nominations |f have been made and it is not the business of any county committee to interfere for one moment in the choice of candidates. Any committee that attempts such a thing is faithless to its trust and a traitor to the party.” How’s This?
