Thenomination oI Judge Par- ker; of New York, Tor the presi: dency, for several weeks prac- tically assured, has been_accom- plished by the democratic na- tional convention at St. Louis. The salient fact about. the an unknown. Until a few weeks ago the nation never heard of him. He is a judge of learning and ability and an honorable man, loved and respected by those who know him, and highly esteemed, it is said, by all who haye business to do with the court of highest jurisdiction in New York state. It is not for any of these reasons, however, that Judge Parker has been named ~by democracy as its standard bearer, but simply be- cause he hails from New York, the empire state of the union and a doubtful state, and that he is a man who has thus far created no active enemies within his own party. What qualities of statesman- ship Judge Parker possesses to fit hum for the presidency no- body knows. He might make a perfect president and he might be a miserable failure; nobody knows, The demogcrats enter the campaign with a heavy handi- cap, The people of this country do not want to experiment with 50 great a responsibility as the chiefest office of the nation. Defeat of The Charter. So strong has been the person- al interest in politics during the pisb few weeks that the defeat urgamzahqn of Bemld jias a city has hardly elicited any comment, whatever. . The vote on the char- ter shows very decisively that the people of Bemidji do not want a city- organization-at-the present. time. The defeated charter was claimed to be faulty in various respects and it prob- ably was, The perfect charter has not yet been written. But were every defect named remedied and the charter-again summifted-toa vote we are con- fident that it could not carry. In the face of tho fact that not half a dozen people can be found in ization is urgently demanded seems than passing stuugn but the fact is that fears for -immediate personal make us willing to sacritice the public ‘good. Some fear loss of political-power, some dread any change that might affect business conditions, many are indifferent. Po-those who sincerely more loss desire the welfare of- the city and the taking of such steps as will con- duce to his- steady and substan- tial growth on broad lines the situation is not pleasant- to con template.
