EXCITED ALL ADA John Smith, Desperado Be- lieved to Have Doubled His Tracks. * MYSTERIOUS STRANGER ANS- WERS HIS DESCRIPTIONS. Was at Ada and Alfpn:s‘ed Sus- picion But Made Good His Escape. At the village of Ada all is ex- citement and the people up that way believe that John Smith, the dexpu'ldn, who is wanted for robbery in this city and who shot and killed Sheriff Harris, at Eau Claire, Wis.. last week was in Ada Tuesday night and slipped through the clutches of the law. Ouc thing is now certain and that is that the reported sur- rounding of Smith in a swamp near Merrllhn Wis., did. not de- velope his capture and if he ‘was surroundéd he succeeded in slipping through the cordon of state militia and making his escape. A sheriff posse went in to search the swamp while the militia surrounded it. Seven trained blood hounds were used in the search but it was yester- day abandoned as futile and the Wisconsin authorities admit themselves baffled. Tuesday evening of this week a man answering Smith’s de- scription in every detail made his appearance at ~ Ada and stopped at one of the hotels there, His close resemblance to (= the descriptions of Smith in the hands of the local police aroused suspicion and he was questioned. He went to the hotel and has not since been seen. His disappear- ance strengthens the beliet that it- was Smith and- that he is douoling back on his tracks to Montana. He is acknowledged a desper- ate and cunning criminal. police author itiesat Ada searched all the outgoing trains and even stopped a flulfht train and went through the cars without being able to unearth auny evidence that might lead to the discovery of the missing stranger.
