Tomorrow Bemidji: and its lumberjack guests will ‘vote on the question of the adoption of the proposed charterand theors canization of a-city.—The char- ter will be beaten by about four to one. The situation is said to be con- templated with great enthusiasm by the saloon men of the city, by the gambler by the proprictors of questionable resorts and by the lumberjacks. What the rest of the city thinks about the mat- ter nobody knows; apparently they do not think much of any- thing. Saloon gamblers, and the proprietors of question- able resorts are opposed to the charter because they are satis- fied to let well enough Present conditions suit them first rate and nobody can blame them if they prefer not to conditions. As to the lumber- jacks they are now able to vote the town any way they please, but were a city organization, with effected uien, alone. risk new fore the lumberjacks are against the charter to a jack. As to the charter itself, nobody knows whether it is good ox_bad. And nobody cares. It's going toj ' be-licked-anyway.— The instru- ment is probably about as good and about as bad’'as * the average Minnesota charter; nobody ex- cept the ¢ really knbws, but it doés mot matter proof reader anyway; soik it. The permanent’ welfare of the city demands organization as a city; we are all agreed on that. But the adoption of a charter might cost us something, so soak it, soak it plenty.
