AR AR KRR ANANANA NS AN AN NN Orficlal Colinly and City Raper SUBSCRIPTION--$5--PER -VEAR The Friend of Nature. The candidate for everybody and of That is governor is a friend of every public proposition. is a matter of course and it really unnecessary for them to say it so much. We all know it any how. But the governor, not the candidate, who is a friend" of the people and of the people’s in- terests, is the man whose ofticial life thus far has demonstrated his friendship to be practical rather than speculative. North- ern Minnesota demands a gov- ernor who is right on the subject of drainage. All the candidates claim to be right, but there is one that we know is right for he has time and again proved it. No section of the state needs drain- age more urgently than Ttasca county and the following remarks of the Big Fork Compass are pe- culiarly pertinent to thissubject: Three wide-awake Itasca county newspapers — the Herrld - Review, Guardian and Bud"eb—chlm that it does not matter to the cause of drainage which of the three candjdates for gover- nor are elected. We beg ‘to differ. ‘While admitting that the election of the right kind of a-representative-is s of vital importance. we maintain that the right kind of a governor is also essential. The gover- nor does more than “‘draw a salary, deal out political jobs submit to newspaper inter- views and entertain accord- ing to the social ambition of Muys, Governor.” The right kind-of a governorimpresses his views upon all important legislation. In fact, his posi- tion and influence wmalke him the chief lobbyist of the state. While Dunn, Collins and Eddy are -each pledged to the reclamition of the state swamp lands, we feel that only one-of them will tale an active interest in drainage legislation, should he be- come governor: One there is who by repeated spersonal *inspection is familiar with the needs of each northern county, and who by property- interests may be looked upon asa citizen of both Ttasca and Beltrami countics. He was among the first to agi- tate the exXtention” of state drainage work. © As aprivate or public citizen he has been an outspoken champion for [tasca’s great need. We re- fer-to L’-ob Dunn. The follow- ing sentiment from his pow- erful paper, the Princeton Union, of a recent issue, had often fonnd expression there before the present cam- paign: “What money has been expended by the State for drainage 'ditches has been worth m:my'timcs* the cost of the ditches. North- ern Minnesota is an empire by itself and has thousands of acres of rich and produc- tive land awaiting reclaima- tion by the construction of ditches. Tt will take many years to complete the system in that part of the state, but all the money that will be ex- pended will be a very profit- able investment to the state. PoOWERFUL influences will un- doubtedly be brought to bear to prevent.the return to the Cass {| Lake land oftice of that portion of 2 | northern as, and can Ttasca which was taken from it shortly after the district was created.
