Grand Forks Herald: The Bemidji Daily Pioneer cele- brates its first birthday an- niversary by issuing an elab- orate number descriptive of the country in which it cir- culates, with numerous illus- trations. The Pioneer is an excellent paper, and a credit to northern Minnesota. The Plague of Politics. There can be no doubt in the mind of any observant person that this country is cursed with too much: politics, The-news- papers are much to blame in that they caterto the-demand of the reading public for political news, or in want of news, political gos- sip. But the newspapers will forever continue to print--what the people want to read and it is in other directions that we must look for relief from the plague of politics. There are few of us who are not convinced that elections are too numerous, bus the American people fear the danger that lies in infrequent elections and thus far they have preferred to suffer |[the enormous losses which fre- elections have entailed rather than assume the risk of i putting the nation in jeopardy by giving any man or set of men = | too long a lease of power. Bur something must be done. Thecampaign before election year by year pushes its business dis- ; turbing force furtherand further |- forward until = there is scarce time for business-to rally from the shock of one election before the -campaign for the next is upon us. Sentiment in fayor of longer terms of office is steadily grow- |ing and the next quarter of a century will see many changes in this direction. a THE possibilities of northern Minnesota as a great summer resort are almost infinite. Where the states of the east have one small spot in which the city man maj' rest and refresh himself from the toil and heat of the office and counting room Minne- sota has a million. Northern Miunesota is dotted thickly with beautiful lakes and wooded shores. Just at present we are each so bysy establishing the .|fame of our own particular lake and woodland that we utterly re- fuse to recognize any other, but the time will come when north- ern Minnesota will offer its hun- dreds of summer resorts and at- % tract its hundreds of thousands of summer resorters. THE Pioneer prints all-the news of north central Minnesota. No other newspaper attempts it. By means-of its Associated Press 1| service it gives to Bemidji and i numerous north. central Minne- sota towns in concise form all the news of the world twelve any other towns in this growing portion of state that it does not as_soon as any other These facts count for its rapidly increasing throughout north central Minnesota, a section of the state destined to become one ac- circulution l'xx of the most thriving and one of the most influential in-the Em- pire State of the Northwest. The Red River Valley Miller’s Club, which denies that it exists for zhe purpose of throwing dust in the eyes of the people, holds its annual at Fargo. In view of all that has been said during the past two weeks it is u.upossnble to understand how three of the northern league teams-could-have lost the open-|] ing games. The result of the timber tre- pass suit against the Common- wealth Lumber company will compel the company to make some $18,000 of their wealth more common, According to the Journal the mosquim has presented his first —|bill at Olberg, and it may con- fidently be added that he will be in the field for collection from this time on. The Bagley Independent doubles its local service and if the people of Clearwater county know a good thing when they see it the Iudependent will shortly double its subscription list. The north country will sound its amen to this_bit_of wisdom from Mary McFadden, “Don’t forget that good roads are the arteries of commerce. If transportation facilities are slow and cumhel 'some, the circulation will suffer.” Campbells Are Coming. The committee of arrange- ments of the Liquor Dealers of the city have closed a deal for the appearance of — the Campbell Bros. circus here on June 13, a day before the convention of the State Liquor Dealers.
