Northern Minnesota is - com- paratively little known as yet. Half of what is known about it is not so and is known only to our harm. 1t behooves the people of this section of the state and especially thenewspapers tostand effort to advertise the peculiar sources.and advantages of north central Minnesota. There has been too much Bick- between the towns of northern-Minnesota, Kach-has been too anxious to obtain the initial advantage and ecach has been too ready to malign the other in the hopes of advantage to itself, Theresultis that from our own testimony many unfavor- able opinions haye been formed of us by the outside world. There is plenty of room in northern Minnesota for every body now here and for a great many more. If we gev together in the effort to let the rest of the res ering we shall have no trouble in get ting the “many more.” Discretion. The Pioneer is rebuked be: canse it stated that the state auditor is compelled to use his discretion settling timber trespass cases, and the following excerpt from the state laws is quoted: “Provided that he shall not rmake any such settlement for an amount less than the value of such timber as shown l;y such scale and appraisal”’~Chap: ter 163, Laws of 1895, Section 88. © Who fixes the ‘“‘yalue of such timber?”’ The state auditor has to fix it and the only way he- can fix it is to estimate it .from the scale .and appraisal. That’s the way it has been done, the way it is done now and the way it al- ways will be done.
