The advance sheets of the re- port of the census bureau on education show forth some startling facts. Reports haye been compiled from 10,000 men now living who are “most-notable in-all depart- ments of useful endeayor’—in other words from ten thousand successful business and profes- sional men. Not one of the 10,000 was with- out education. There were twenty-four that were self taught and 278 who were taught at home. Of the 10,000, theré were 1,066 who had but a common school training, 1,627 who had but a/ high school fraining, while- the number of college trained were 7,709, i Surely Lhia:/ti-'eumndmm pro- portion of ~Successful and useful meu/,,w]{o were college trained méans something most signifi- cant. The census bureau points out that the boy with only a common school education but one chance in 9,000.that a high school training increased this chance twenty-two times,” and that a college training gives the young man about ten times the chance of the high school boy and 200 times the chance of the boy whose training stopped with the common schools. Anyone who runs can read the has moral of this. Tue charges made by Dunn that the Great Northern railroad contributed to the camgaign fund “|tor Judge Collins when the latter was elected to the supreme bench in 1894 are as grave as grave could be. Tin postoffice receipts at Be- midji have passed the $9,000 mark and-there is little doubt that-the city will within'less™ than a year be entitled to special delivery. In fact if the increase now obtain- ing is maintained it will be hardly more than six month before four quarters record will show a busi- ness in excess of the 10,000 marlk, Every man in Minnesota must deplore the dirt that has been dragged into the gubernatorial campaign and Judge Collins unfortunate that supporters have begun it. is doubty his JupGe CoLLiNs should have remembered that a man is known by the company he keeps.
